Hello    I am looking for any and all information regarding my great grandmother Honora Denehy or any of her family or descendants.   Honora (Nora) was born around 1872 to Timothy Denehy and Ellen (Possibly Fitzpatrick).  Family records indicate that she lived in Buttevant.  Possible siblings Mary(1865), Nano (1868) and John (1874).  Honora left for the U.S. around 1885 to 1887.  Family info states the she lived on (New St. ????)  She married Charles H Orton in Massachusettes in 1891.  Thank you for any attention that you can give to this request.  Brian Sullivan, Oceanside, California, U.S.A.

  • Hi Brian

There is a baptism record of Honora Denehy with parents Timothy Denehy & Ellen Fitzpatrick in Buttevant R C parish 18th May 1868 on www.rootsireland.ie/ (subscription site)

    Siblings: Philip 1858 Julia 1860 Mary 1865 Julia (again?) 1871 & John 1874

All are from Buttevant R C

Witnesses on some are Will & Jeremiah Denehy

Annoyingly there are no Denehys in Griffiths Valuation (free site) in Buttevant Cork (1853)!

There are 12 in the Tithe Applotments (1823-37) (free) but Buttevant is not mentioned.

Also annoying - I couldn't find a marriage record for Tim & Ellen.

I also tried www.irishgenealogy.ie/ which is free & has lots of Cork records but no luck.

However your tree on ancestry has Timothy born 1847 Buttevant and Ellen 1843 in Kilshanning which makes them a bit young for most of the children!

  • Hi Brian,

New Street is indeed in Buttevant town it is still there. There was a John Fitzpatrick who lived in New Street in 1851. New Street is located in the townland of Gregane in Buttevant just behind the Mainstreet in town. John had according to the Griffiths valuation a house, yard and small garden

  •      Thank you so much.  The information you have provided is greatly appreciated.  I noticed that the surname Dennehy has two n's.  Honora was always listed in U.S. census with one N.  Not unusual regarding the spelling of names.  I will begin to use the surname spelling that is listed in the Irish records assuming that they are far more accurate.

  • Hello again Ann Marie.   Relative to the Denehys that you have helped me with.  I have found a record of birth on Ancestry for another child of Timothy and Ellen.  The given name is "Nano".  My question is this a nickname or a know given name short for something else.  I have never seen or heard this name before.  Thanks    Brian
