I am a descendant of Denis Hannen baptised 17 Nov. 1821 Lagroe (Lackaroe) Buttevant.

I have a Roman Catholic Church Baptism record that names the parents as Matthew Hannen and Mary Hayes.  Sonsors are Thomas Welsh and Catherine Cronin.

The first record I have found for Denis in America is 1849.  In 1850 He married Ellen Roche a native of neighboring Bally McGree (Ballintlea?) Doneraile.  They married in Kingston, NY

I was unable to find a Matthew or Denis Hannan in the Cork Tithe Applotment Records (1823-37) The townland of Lagroe (Lackaroe) is not even mentioned at all in the Tithe Applotment Records.  I did find a John Hannan listed in Ballintlea, Doneraile.  This is interesting as I know that Denis did have a brother John - but he would have been to young to be leasing land so this could be another relation possibly.

In Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) There is a listing for Matthew Hannan, Patrick Hannan (both of New Street) and Thomas Hannan (of Creggane).

I am looking specifically for information on Denis' parents  Matthew Hannen and Mary Hayes. Is there a marriage record?  Did they have any other children? Are they buried in Buttevant?

Also I would love to get a sense of how the famine affected the area.  Was there forced immigration for some? Are there any surviving workhouse records?

Thank you for your time and I greatly appreciate any guidance your can offer.

  • Hi - Thank you for your message. The reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist. Some registers for urban areas pre-dating 1800 may exist ? though often these can be fragmented- as there was an increased need in cities or larger towns to document the population. Please also note that the Church of Ireland was the official church of the country and therefore the bulk of information that does survive for earlier periods is often from these registers.

Most Catholic records are held locally - One site which might be of use is - http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ - where you can ?browse? an overview of available records per county. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for possible assistance.

Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870-are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.  The Anglican Record Project is has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf

  • Thanks for your post, Aileen.  I am a descendant of Timothy Hannon most likely came from the same immediate area as Denis. They would also be of similar age. Timothy's 1849 Massachusetts marriage record states that his parents were Daniel and Mary. The only Dan and Mary (McDonnell) I can find are from Doneraile. I have found names for three children -- no Timothy.  Curiously, the only Timothy Hannon/Hannan I can find was born to William Hannan and Catherine Heffernan in July 1820 at Barrack Buttevant!  Do Daniel & Mary or William & Catherine show up anywhere in your records? Given the very close proximity of Doneraile and Buttevant the likelihood of a family relationship seems pretty high. I'm happy to assist in every way possible. At the moment I do not have anything more to add to your search. Best of luck to you!
