I am looking for information on Hanora (Nora) Sullivan, Baptised June 24, 1819 and immigratd to the United States in 1843.  She married Michael Sullivan (not related when married) He is from Cork and was born in 1820. Do not have much more on him.  Her sister was Mary Sullivan and married Dennis Shea.  They left Bear Haven , Ireland in 1843. Her uncle was Shon Bohan, he was her mother's brother. Shon went to Boston in 1838.

Any help or information would be helpful and if there are any family still in the area.

Thanks

Dan Glatt

  • Roger,  Thank you looking forward to learning more about my family and my Irish Heritage. I am actually in Killarney today June 24 on a tour of Ireland. Wish I had time to visit Caheragh but that is why you make plans to come back.

Killarney is a great town. I hope you had a chance to visit Killarney National Park and Muckross Castle. My wife and I have visited Ireland ten times over the years.

It appears that the Caheragh parish liaison has not responded.

I assume you have returned to the States. The Caheragh RC records start in 1818.

     http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0024

I searched www.irishgenealogy.ie which is a free Irish government site and did not find the marriage record. Likely the marriage occurred before 1818 and possibly Catherine had older siblings. I did find baptismal records for two younger brothers and one sister. See below. The originally lived in Clooncuggr townland but by 1825 were in Maune townland

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Dan & Roger,

it might make things a little easier for both of you in your research to kjnow that the correcrt names of the two Townlands mentioned are Clouncuggar and Maune. Very poor transcription of Townland names in most websites including irishgenealogy.ie. Clouncuggar is also spelled as Clooncugger. Please feel free to contact me on Townland names in the general West Cork area as I assisted in compiling a complete Townland database for the Fire Service and am also very familiar with the area. You can contact me through Abbeystrowry on this website or on my personal email address: frankfahy@eircom.net

Also, as you have probably noted already Roger, Caheragh is also spelled Caharagh in irishgenealogy.ie and you will get some different results using each spelling.

Hope this info will assist you both.

    Regards,

  • Thanks for the information! Plan a visit soon, So exciting!!

I am Stuck too on Honora "Nora" Sullivan 1819-1902 and Michael Sullivan 1826-1902. One or both were O'Sullivan before leaving Ireland. Her sister Mary sullivan married Dennis Shae. They all came on the same ship in 1844. Stayed a few days with Shon Bohan in Boston, Massachusetts . Nora and Michael met on the ship. (From book When We get to where we're going by Bertha Blacker, Nora and Michael's grandaughter. I have another family book writen by another granddaughter said The Townsend Star July 26,1902 has Nora's obit. ( That is in Montana maybe Shelby) Her family book also said "Grandma Sullivan was born in Bear Haven, Cork Ireland on July 16,1920, was married on June 3, 1845 to Michael D. Sullivan in Cambridge, Mass. Another family member said Honora and Mary took a train to cork from up north in Ireland  for the ship.

Michael Sullivan's Niece came to the United States ( Her obit said she married shortly after coming to the United States) Mary Sullivan born in County Cork Married James Gill in 1890 at the age of 28. Marriage licence said she was born in County Cork Ireland.

Wish I knew who Dan Glatt. We could compare notes!   Any help greatly appricated.

    Thanks, Renee

  • I have a Honora Sullivan (born 1833) in Kilarney, Kerry.  She married Diongsius (Denis) Sullivan In Templenoe, Kerry Ireland. I always thought my Sullivan family was from Cork but I have birth records for Daniel Sullivan ( my G. Grandfather) in Derenacolough, Kenmare Kerry.  He had a brother named Patrick, also born Kenmare, Kerry.  I have records of siblings Jeramiah and and Ellen as well. Daniel moved to New Jersey and married Hannah Nolan (born in Kilkenny). Patrick also moved to New Jersey and married Helen Monahan.

Daniel Sullivan, it seems, was quite the character. There is an article about his death in the 11/14/1924 New York Times, as well as many other papers across the country (he's googleable). He died by accidentally blowing himself up with dynamite. He worked blowing up tree stumps in Union County, NJ and one day got too close. He is rather famously known as Dynamite Dan Sullivan.

  • Hi Abtomjack,

You & I are DNA matches, you match me on my moms side, Lucey, over Ballingeary direction. My great grandfather married into a Sullivan farm near Curraglass. I wonder if that is your Cork Sullivan connection?
