I am researching my great grandmother Johanna O'Leary and her father Peter. Johanna  who was born in Kinneigh in 1832 and was baptised  (as were  7 of her siblings) in the parish of Enniskeane/Desertserges( I think I am right in thinking this is a combined parish). However for some unfathomable reason her father Peter ( a most unusual name at the time) moved the family to Caheragh in 1853. There his wife had their last child Ellen. My great grandmother Johanna married in August 1861 at Caheragh. She and her husband migrated to Australia later that year. Her father lived in Caheragh til his death in 1876 and her brother Daniel took over the farm. Daniel died in 1913 and the farm was left to Timothy O'Leary. Daniel was married to Ellen but I am not sure if this Timothy is a son or nephew. Timothy leaves or dies in 1935. I would be interested to know 1)  if there are any of these O'Leary's still in Caheragh 2)  why Peter O'Leary moved to Caheragh 3) Where Peter O'Leary comes from originally. I think Enniskeane but there is a Peter Leary in the tithe applotments in Ballyhadown North Caheragh in1830. Perhaps a relation. Many thanks

    I checked the online Irish phone book and there were 589 O'Learys in Co. Cork. You may want to go through the records to see if you see a O'Leary near Caheragh. Make sure you use the Residential Tab.

    Here is the 1911 census record for the family. The oldest son in the household is Timothy. I presume he inherited the farm in 1913.

    I think he moved the family in 1853 to take over the farm from the other Peter. The townland is the same.

  • Roger. Thank you so much for this. Yes I had always thought that peter moved from Kinneigh to take up the farm in Ballyhowdown North but the genealogist in Skibereen told me I had my facts wrong and that it was too far to move. She thought the peter  ( with wife Norry)in Kinneigh in 1852  is different to the one in Caheragh in 1853 but my great grandmother does seem to be born in Kinneigh and married in Caheragh. It was quite a long way to move. Do you think it is worth posting on the Deserterges board. I would like to know where Peter came from

    I did some quick calculations and the two locations are about 21 miles (35 kilometers) apart. That was a great distance for the mid-19th century but not an impossible distance.

    We do not have a parish liasion in Desertserges parish. You are free to post in that parish and maybe another Cork PL may have a comment. If you do repost, make sure you mention that you had posted in Caheragh already. You may also want to include the link for this thread as part of the message. Thay way others can see the background.
