I am coming to Cork in February to further research my family as I've gone as far as I can in England. Where will I be able to get the most useful information?. I did post messages and get some feedback in 2014 but have not managed to take my research any further until now. I only have 2 days in Cork so want to make sure I get to the best places to find out as much as possible. Will I need to make appointments anywhere?

Thank you

Kathryn Knight (nee Daly)

  • Kathryn,

There are no passenger lists for travel between Ireland and England. (It was just a domestic journey).

Perhaps you would like to post details of your ancestor, including approx. age, denomination and any other information you have, and we’ll try and advise you on where to search.

  • Michael John Daly left Ireland and in the 1861 Census in England was in the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman. I do not know how or when he left Ireland or where he first went - maybe it was straight into the Navy? By 1881 he was a Coastguard in Cornwall.

  • I've copied this from my message I sent in 2014!

I have searched further and think I have found the record of Eugene's marriage based on your information for the Parish of Cork & Ross South.

I'm hoping I've found the correct family. So far I have got:

Eugene Daly married to Catherine Barrett on 3rd Sept 1836. I have then found records of Baptism for their children:

    Eugene Daly 5 Sept 1837

    John Daly 24 June 1841

    Cathn Daly 2 Aug 1843

I cannot yet find records of Eugene senior's baptism/birth or death/burial or of his parents. I would also like to find out what he did.

As for John Daly. My records of him in England call him Michael John but there doesn't seem to be any reference to him being called Michael in Ireland. Do you know why this might be?

If you can point me in the right direction of where I can visit for more information that would be great.

    Thank you

    Kathryn

  • There is a record of a Eugene Daly baptism on 17.11.1811 in Cork South parish. Parents were John Daly & Elizabeth McCarthy of Cove St, Cork. Can’t say whether that’s the same man who married in 1836 but it’s a possible. You might want to see if you can trace him. Perhaps via a street directory. (Try local studies section in Cork city library).

Military records are kept in NAS, Kew London but are also on Ancestry and fmp. (pay to view sites). You could search for him there. Likewise Coastguard records are in NAS too.

Typically sailors joined the Navy aged 15 or 16 so I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s when Michael John joined up. His service record should tell you, if you can locate it.

I see a couple of mentions of a Michael Daly from Cork, born 1840 & 1842.

Can’t explain about the change of name.

  • Thankyou for your help Elwyn. I have followed up your suggestions. Sometimes I am not sure if I am following the right line as there are so many Dalys and lots of Eugenes, Michaels and Johns!!  Michael John's Dad, Eugene, was a carpenter. I have a copy of Michael's marriage certificate that shows this. Is there any way of following that line of enquiry regarding profession? I would also like to find out when Eugene and Catherine died and where they are buried so that I might visit the grave in February.    Can you suggest a church and cemetery I should visit?      Thanks

  • I don’t think there’s any way of tracing carpenters by profession. However it may be helpful if searching street directories as it should separate him from other Dalys. Can’t help with cemeteries. I live in Co Antrim at the other end of the country and don’t know Cork that well.  Possibly a local may be able to help. Otherwise you may need to ask at one of the churches in the parish.
