I am researching my family and have got back to my ancesters who came from Ireland. I am looking for information about Michael John Daly born in Castletownsand in 1842 and his father Eugene Daly born in 1817.

I have looked at the 1851, 1861, 1881 and 1901 Census returns but have not been able to find them.

I am hoping that there maybe some details held in Parish records but I am struggling to get anywhere. I hope you can help me.

Many thanks,

Kathryn K

  • Regarding my previous message here is a little more information.

Michael John Daly left Ireland and in the 1861 Census in England was in the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman. I do not know how or when he left Ireland or where he first went - maybe it was straight into the Navy? By 1881 he was a Coastguard in Cornwall.

I do not have anymore information about Eugene Daly (his father) or any other siblings of Michael.

I am hoping to travel to Cork soon but would like some ideas of where to search when I get there.

    Thanks

  • Hi Kathryn

There are 4 baptism records of John Daly in Cork 1842 on www.rootsireland.ie/

2 are from Castlelyons RC but none has father Eugene

There are 2 Eugene Daly baptisms 1 1824 & 1 1827 but neither from Castlelyons

There is a charge to view the full records on rootsireland

I got better results on www.irishgenealogy.ie/ which is a free site

There is a baptism record of John Daly with father Eugene 24 June 1841 Parish is Cork & Ross South

    http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/7d56120085813

The Tithe Applotments (1823-37 & free online) have  503 Dalys in Cork including 1 Eugene (maybe the name ran in the family - in St Finbars) & 14 in Castlelyons

  • Thanks so much Col for your information.

I have searched further and think I have found the record of Eugene's marriage based on your information for the Parish of Cork & Ross South.

I'm hoping I've found the correct family. So far I have got:

Eugene Daly married to Catherine Barrett on 3rd Sept 1836. I have then found records of Baptism for their children:

    Eugene Daly 5 Sept 1837

    John Daly 24 June 1841

    Cathn Daly 2 Aug 1843

I cannot yet find records of Eugene senior's baptism/birth or death/burial or of his parents. I would also like to find out what he did.

As for John Daly. My records of him in England call him Michael John but there doesn't seem to be any refernece to him being called Michael in Ireland. Do you know why this might be?

I would also like to know when he came to England. I've tried to look for passenger lists and emigration records but without success.

Any further help would be great.

    Many thanks,

    Kathryn K (nee Daly)
