I am trying to figure out where John McCarthy b abt 1775 (married to Mary "Joanna" Myers and to Ellen Hayes) went after 1826.  John McCarthy and David Kent b abt 1742-1825 (married to Margaret Fitzgerald who died in 1859 in Fermoy) farmed a townland named Upper and Lower Ballyhamsher/Ballyhampsher/Ballyhamshire, Castlelyons, Cork for many years.  But after 1826 John McCarthy seems to disappear. John McCarthy's landlord was a John Peard of Towermore and I have a Land Index record where John McCarthy is giving some of his land to his brother Denis McCarthy as part of a marriage portion.  The deed was written in 1807 but not registered until 1820.   John's brother Denis McCarthy married Mary Kent. John's son David McCarthy who married Ellen Kent (David Kent's daughter) left Ireland for Canada in 1826 along with David's twin sister Margaret McCarthy married to Edmond Dineen.   Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located the 1824 Tithe record for the McCarthys and Kents (see below). They had fairly large holdings. The townland was Ballyhamsherry. I checked the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Castlelyons civil parish and although there were McCarthys and Kents in the parish, they were not shown in Ballyhamsherry. Regarding John McCarthy, I can only assume he died. There are no death records in the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0028  and civil registration did not start until 1864.

  • Roger...thank you for trying to figure out my question.  I think you might be correct that John may have died and his children left for Canada after his death.

  • HI. Mary McCarthy was my 3rd great grandmother. This is what I got from Ancestry: When Margaret (McCarthy) Dineen was born in 1800 in Castlelyons, Cork, Ireland, her father, John, was 25, and her mother, Mary, was 20. She had one son with Edmund Dineen in 1832. She died on November 5, 1873, in Dundee, Quebec, at the age of 73. Her father John passed away in 1825 in Castlelyons, Cork, Ireland, at the age of 50. They suggest that  John McCarthy was born in 1775 in Fermoy, Cork, Ireland, to David? McCarthy, age 25.  Hope this helps?

  • So excited to meet one of Mary's descendants! I also have a tree on ancestry which I have been working in for about 10 years. Maybe we have already connected. I will check.

I was in Castlelyons last October and tried to locate John McCarthy's grave. He is not buried in the Castlelyons cemetery. So still working on locating where he is buried.

If I ever do figure out I will let you know. Thanks for connecting with me.
