Children

Ellen b c1847 - Cork

Johanna b c1851 - Cork

Michael b c1853 - Sutherland

Margaret b c1857 - Chatham

Found in English 1861 census with the above birth years and places.

Margaret is my 2x gr-grandmother. I can find no birth registrations for any of the children - nor any christening/baptisms for them.

I can find my marriage for Daniel and Julia.

A prominent professional genealogist has found none of the above evidence either.

The reputed dates and places of birth are repeated on other documents such as Margaret's marriage, and other English censuses.

Daniel seems to disappear before 1871 and Julia is living as a widow.

I have found a transcription on Roots Ireland of a Daniel SULLIVAN marrying a Julia BUCKLEY of Gurteenadona on 22 Jan 1848 in Castlemagner.

And an Ellen SULLIVAN bap 9 Nov 1848 and a John SULLIVAN bap 22 Jan 1852 - address Rosskeen born to the above parents.

I have a theory that this is my family and that the John is a mistranscription for Johanna.

I'd need to look at the original registers I suppose - and I know the Catholic ones are being digitised and put online - but I wondered if you would be able to help please?

Thanks

You say that you have been unable to find birth registrations for any of the children. The first 3 (born Cork and Sutherland) are before the start of statutory birth registration (1864 in Ireland and 1855 in Scotland). So there are no birth registrations to be found for them. The only child that should have a birth cert is the one born in Chatham (English birth registration started in 1837).

For the first 3 the only record of their birth that may exist is a baptism. From some of the places of birth (Sutherland and Chatham) I suspect that Daniel was in the army or perhaps the navy. If so, do you know which unit he served with and have you checked regimental/military baptism records? Most regiments kept such records.

The RC records in the National Library should be on-line on 8th July. You will then be able to search them by parish.
