From the research I have already found, my paternal great grandparents Daniel and Ellen Corbett came to the USA sometime before 1875.  They lived in New York City where 4 of their children were born.  Sometime around 1880 or 1881 they returned to Ireland where my grandmother Della Corbett was born in May 1881.  I cannot find her birth or baptism info.  In searching the 1901 Ireland census I find Daniel and Ellen and some of their additional children in Cork.  In the Ireland 1911 census I find them and a daughter and granddaughter living in Greenane District.  My grandmother Della came to the USA around 1899 or 1900 but I cannot find her immigration details.  What I earnestly am looking for is marriage details for Daniel and Ellen, Ellen's maiden name, their parents names, mother's maiden name, etc, etc.  If you can help in this endeavor, I would be ever-so grateful!

Thank you!

    Delia:

The 1911 census record indicates that Daniel and Ellen were married 27 years before (approximately 1883). Ellen also had five children but only three were living as of 1911.

I could not find the civil marriage index record for Daniel and Ellen and I also could not find a civil birth index record for Delia or a church baptismal record.

I did find a baptismal record for Daniel in 1883 in Castletownroche and Mary Ellen in 1887 in Kanturk. In both cases, the mother was Ellen Mannix.

I can't explain why Ellen only shows five total children if the couple had four children in NYC. Maybe she thought the questions related to children born in Ireland. Also, she indicated a marriage around 1883 but did she if she had children in the USA, she would have been married earlier.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Thank you for your work.  I believe the baptismal records you found for Daniel and Mary Ellen are Ellen's children.  All indications I have found show that Ellen was born in 1850.  It is curious that her name is listed as Mannix.  Perhaps she divorced and went back to her maiden name...or remarried?  At one time I did find an Ellen Mannix who was born in Cork (unknown year) who was married to Daniel Corbett.  Her parents were noted to be Michael Mannix and Mary Foley.  She had a child named Ellen.  I wrote this down but neglected to note the source or the year in question.  When I saw that you mentioned Mannix, it made me wonder if I should have persued this!   Now I cannot find it again!  Perhaps you might have more success.

As for Daniel Corbett, there are several to be found, but none that I can locate verifiable info about before he and Ellen lived in New York (at least 1875 or before as their first child was born in New York in 1875). and after he and Ellen returned to Ireland (after March 1880 when my greataunt was born in New York but before May 1881 when Della was born in Ireland) One Daniel that I found has a middle initial F.  He seems the best possible Daniel...but, not sure.

And, surely my grandmother Della Corbett (could be Delia like me!) has to be somewhere before I find her in the 1900 US census at age 19, born in Ireland.

I also cannot find any immigration info or passenger lists for any of these journeys!

I do appreciate your help very much and look forward to any further info you are able to find.

    Sincerely, Delia
