Hoping for some help with my search brick wall please. I have been searchig for months for a Marriage record for my gr grandfather Andrew Mullane.  I have of course found there are a number of men in Cork sharing this name, and my problem is that although I managed to find birth, marriage and death records that fit, plus the birth of my gr grandmother Mary and her siblings, which all fit perfectly, her Marriage Certificate in Brisbane, Australia, definitely says her mother's name is Margaret O'Sullivan, and all the positive matches from the RC baptism, and marriage registers in their parish in Cork name his wife as Margaret McCarthy.  (Her sister Ellen would seem to have married a John Buckley, and then their daughter Margaret married a John O'Sulllivan, who emigrated to Australia, and we visited them many times in Parramatta when I was a child. Margaret was always referred to as my mother's "cousin", so that all matches, but I can't seem to resolve this mystery of the different surname for Andrew's wife.) Andrew is listed on the 1911 Census as living in Inchidaly, Clonmeen, Cork, "father-in-law" with John Buckley and Ellen and family. I have searched other RC registers in Cork round the relevant dates for all of them.  I did wonder if perhaps the first Margaret died, and the second wife was an O'Sullivan, but can't find anything to support this theory either.  Any suggestions would be most welcome thank you.  Carollyn Potter

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located a likely marriage record in Kanturk RC parish in 1859. Margaret's maiden name was shown as McCarty on the transcription. I would review the register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0063  to see how the name looks to you.

I also located the likely civil death index record for Margaret in 1905. The actual death record would not show her maiden name.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Thank you Roger, I have been unable to access the link you suggested for the marriage record in Kanturk, am I doing something wrong, the register only offers November for 1859 on this link, but I did already have the index record from Roots that matches, and would like to view the original if possible.  Thing is if there is no record anywhere for Andrew Mullane's marriage to a Margaret O'Sullivan, can we assume that my gr grandmother Mary Mullane was mistaken in naming her as O'Sullivan on her marriage certificate to Rodger Clancy in Brisbane?  Would it be possible for me to read the death record for Margaret you mentioned and where should I look for that please? Thank you very much for your help Roger, Regards, Carollyn

For some reason the register has a gap as you indicated. Obviously the record exists since Roots Ireland transcribers had access to it. You may want to contact the church to see if they have the 1859 register http://cloynediocese.ie/parish-kanturk/   The actual death record is not online now. You would have to write to the General Register Office to get a copy for around 4 euros. Let me know if you need instuctions.

  • Thank you again Roger.  I will certainly write off to the Parish in search of the record, and would very much welcome instructions on how to order the Death Record mentioned.  Carollyn Potter

Go to this link  https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx    print out the death form and fill it out to the best of your abaility. Make sure you ask for a copy only. Include the info from the index record above. You have to mail the request to Ireland (address provided when you print the form) but you can ask GRO to e-mail the copy back.
