My grandmother was Bridget Nagle from Castlepook Doneraile, I have been told that our ancestry goes back to Nano Nagle from Ballygriffen.  I am trying to document the connection for our family tree.  Any help that you might be able to give me would be helpful.  Thank you

  • Last night, I posted a request for help making the connection from my family who are from Doneraile and Nano Nagle who was from Ballygriffen.  I have the following information which might be helpful:

My grand mother was Bridget Nagle born 6 Sept 1879 in Doneraile.

Her parents were John Nagle from Doneraile and Mary Mahoney born in Kilavullen.

Her siblings were as follows:  David (b. abt 1868), Nora (b. abt 1869), Mary (b. abt 1869), Patrick (b. abt 1872), Johanna (b. abt. 1874, and Ellen (b. abt 1876).

My grandmother came to the USA  arriving in Boston on Sept. 30, 1895 aboard the Scythia.  A number of her siblings also left Ireland and came to Boston around that time.  When they arrived, they all seemed to go to a sister who lived in Winchester, Massachusetts which was a short distance from Boston.

A number of years ago, my mother's first cousin Lar Murphy was asked to plant a tree at the birthplace of Nano Nagle during a ceremony....he was the son of Nora Nagle from Doneraile.

I don't know if this will be of any help.

Thank you in advance for any assistance that you might be able to give me.

I did locate the 1867 civil marriage index record for John and Mary. If you want a copy of the record, you can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie  Fill out their form and provide the year of marriage, registration district (Mallow) and the volume and page number ( 5 and 692). Cost around 4 euros. The names of the fathers of the bride and groom will be on the reocrd and where they were living. I have also included the 1901 and 1911 census records for the family in case you have not seen them.

  • Roger:

Thank you for this information.  I had been going through every section of Doneraile looking for a reference to Castlepook.  I found the daughter Nora's husband John Murphy on both census listings at Newtown, Doneraile where he lived before he married and went to Castlepook to live.  He was Lar Murphy's father.  He had a brother Mick who eventually lived with his daughter and her husband in a little house on the way from the center of Doneraile to Castlepook.  Looking on an old map, it could be in the area of what was Newtown.  The first time I was there, the old house in Castlepook was still standing but not used and the family had moved to a new house on the same property about 2 years before.  That was in 1969, so I wouldn't doubt the old house in Newtown had also been replaced by the house that we saw..

There is something odd on the 1911 census listing.  I see the name Catherine Benchy age 26...she is listed as "sister" .....my reading would lead me to believe she would be the sister of the head of the house.  That would be John Nagle...who is according to the census 74....I don't know if that would be a transcription error and she was actually 76....it lists her a single...I don't know if as a widow living in her brother's home she would be listed as single....do you have any thoughts on that.

Thank you for opening another avenue for me to look into.

The actual census record is very faded but I'm able to decipher the info. It says Catherine Dennehy 26 visitor not sister. The transcriber made two mistakes. I will send an e-mail to the National Archives. They are very slow in making corrections.

  • Roger: by the date and her age, Catherine Dennehy would most likely be the same Catherine Dennehy who married Michael Quirke from Mount Henry, Firies, Kerry.  Her daughter later married Lar Murphy and lived at the Nagle house in Castlepook....then her son married one of the Murphy daugters and they lived in Castlemaine.....a large number of both families traveled to Boston, MA and lived in Winchester right outside the City of Boston, later moving into the City as they found work.  There are a lot of marrages between the families.  Catherine Dennehy lived in Winchester/Boston from around 1900 to 1909 when she went back to Ireland and later married Michael Quirke.  She was godmother to one of my mother's older sisters.
