Hello in Ireland,

I am still looking for my ancestors in Doneraile.  My Patrick Walsh was born probably in November 1812. There are

a John and a Patrick in Griffiths Valuation either of whom  could be his father.  He named his first child John which

would indicate the former.   He attested for the 36th Regiment of Foot in 1831, confirming his age and birthplace.

His next 14 years and 76 days were spent in the Army all over the world. In c1842 he married a Margaret Mary

Lowney from Bere Island but we cannot find out where.  It was not Bere as I have all Margarets details and have

seen the BI Records.  After he left the Army he cam to Western Australia as  guard on a convict ship with his wife

and children. It seems that they travelled all over the world with him as an army family.  I have been unable to find

any details of his parents, their marriage or the birth of any siblings in Doneraile.  Any information gratefully received.

  • Many thanks for your help Col.  It seems a bit later for a Catholic child to be baptised. However I understand that the local church was not built until after Patrick was born.  One of Patrick's children baptised his daughter Ellen so that could wellbe correct. I have now gone dabbling again and found another child of this couple at http://registers.nli.ie/pages/vtls000633249_016 for March 1811 which could be Patrick if I am reading the forename correctly. The parents of Ellen McGrath were the sponsors.  Trouble is that if the first Patrick died, the second was too young to enlist in 1831 and say he was 18.  Gives me something to go on with though.    Regards Jill in Sydney

  • Sorry everyone, I miss typed the date of the Baptism for Patrick that I found.  It should have said 1817 - and the baptism

register is quite clear on the date even though the names are difficult.
