Hello,

I am searching for my Grandmother's family. She was born in 1894 to Denis and Mary Collins.  She left Ireland in 1913 headed I believe for Boston.  She married Kenneth H. Nutting in Maine where her father signed as a witness, he signed Pat Collins but his name is really Denis. She and Kenneth lived in Massachusets their entire marriage, they had many children together including my father Leo Wayne Nutting.  I don't know her Mother's sir or maiden name and I am not sure but I think she was from Cork, perhaps the Margaret Mary Collins who is from Townland/Street:GurteenaduhigDistrict:KnockskaghCounty:Cork, if so she would have had several brothers and sisters, John, Mary Ellen, Patrick, Harriet, Agnes, and Arthur.  Her family was Roman Catholic if this is the correct Margaret Mary.  If anyone can help me find my Grandmother's birthplace I will be forever grateful.  I did not get a chance to meet her, so I have been searching very long and hard to find her so I can know about her and perhaps a bit about the family she left in Ireland.  Thank you for any help you can give me, I have two sons who should know about their Grandmother.and their heritage.  God Bless

Respectfully,

Sheryl Hansen

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Need some clarification. Do you have information which points to the Collins family in Gurteenaduhig or is it a hypothesis at this time? The registration district for that area is Skibbereen and there are four different Margaret Collins civil birth records in the Skibbereen district for 1894. One option is to write to the General Register Office and try to get a copy of the correct record for your Margaret. I checked a couple of sources but was unable to locate a marriage record for a Denis Collins and a Mary Ellen.

    Let m eknow.

  • Hello Roger,

I am so happy right now because I have just heard from a relative here that confirmed Margaret Mary Collins listed in the 1901 Census in  Gurteenaduhig is in fact, my Grandmother's family.  Denis and Mary Ellen were buried in Drinagh Cemetary in 1947 and 1946 respectively.  Margaret Mary's oldest brother is John and is said to have been the contact on the burial records but I have not checked on that for sure.  I still do not have Mary Ellen's maiden name but I should be able to get that and more now that I know it is the correct family.  I am just so excited right now I have not had a chance to get a plan for researching further put together yet.

Thank you for all your help in the past and I would most appreciate any further information you might be able to get now that this is the confirmed family for which I have been searching.

    Thank you again,

    Sheryl

  • Hi Sheryl!

Here is the civil birth record for Margaret in 1894. Mother's maiden name was Burke.

I could not find a marriage record.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you so much, Roger.  I am a bit overwhelmed after searching so long to now have this information.  I am not sure what the next step should be.  If you have any suggestions, I am certainly thankful and look forward to hearing from you.  I have thought to get the record for Mary Ellen and Denis birth as you informed me of the link above.  I also thought I might try to find some relatives of my Grandmother's still in Ireland.  She had several brothers and sisters I would love to contact.  I would do so as respectfully as possible keeping in mind we have cultural differences and I do not have any information about the relationships that she left in Ireland.

So anyway, thank you again for getting this information to me.  I will be grateful always for your help.  If there is anything I might be able to do for the community at this point, please feel free to let me know.

    With Regards,

    Sheryl

  • Roger,

Margaret Mary's Mother had last name Dolan. That is from Margaret's own hand on an application. I'm afraid I am not closer to finding her after all this time as Mary Dolan has not come to light in my searches. I search on.

  • Hi Sheryl,
I've had a look at your previous messages. Are you still convinced it is the Collins of Gurteenaduig (Kilmacabea parish)? If so then I think the birth record for Margaret was the one showing her mother's maiden name as (O') Connor in 1894. There is a marriage record then for a Denis Collins and Maria Connor (Driminidy) from Drinagh parish - married 12 Apr 1893 in Drimoleague Church.

Of course if you have found evidence of the maiden name being Dolan or Doolan or Dooling that could put a question mark on things.

There is a marriage in Clonakilty district 1875 of a Denis Collins and a Mary Dooling that might be worth looking at.

Best of luck in your search!
