I am searching for Birth/Baptism of Denis Brien(Breen) he married Julia McCarty 16 Feb 1836 in parish Dromtariffe Co. Cork, children Ellen  Dec.1836, Cornelius 1838, Owen (Eugene) 1841 & John 1844, have not found any more. If I follow the first born female is named after maternal side and first male after Paternal, .. then Denis's father should be Cornelius Brien. .. the records for Dromtariffe in NLI baptism start in 1832.  I have not been able to find any records for this parish before this date .. have you any suggestions ? can you help.

also Julia McCarty I have found 2 baptism with father Owen/Eugene (1) Julia 1816, in Annakissy Mother Julian Roche, (2) Julian, Jan 1808 St Finbarr's (South) Cork city Cork, mother Ellen Dwyer,

Did they travel very far from there families and parish ??

Can you help

Kind regards

  • One way that you might be able to check for the name of Denis Brien's father would be in the tithe applotment books, which were compiled in or about 1834.  I have a great grandmother, Elizabeth Cronin,  who was born in Dromtarriffe in 1835, and I found a likely father for her that way,

In case you're interested, the parish name Dromtarriffe comes from the Irish Drom Tarbh, meaning "bull ridge", and may refer to an ancient pagan ceremony where a bull calf was sacrificed on May 6th near a holy well still located in the parish

  • Hello Kevin45sfl,

Thank you for your reply,  I have looked at 'tithe applotment books' for Dromtarriffe 1826-27 there is a few 'Brien' spelt Bryne, no Cornelius, and a lot of McCarthy (McCarty) Julia McCarthy father I think was Owen, and there is an Owen McCarthy 1827 who would fit as her father and did they keep any parish records for this area anywhere else?

I found a Cornelius Brien in Castlemagner, resident city Pulleen, could this be the family I'm looking for, is the parish of Castlemagner very far from Dromtarriffe?

also when did the 'tithe applotment books' start, the one I found for Cork said 1814-1855 but actually start 1824 - 1855 could not find any parish between 1814 & 1824.

Any further help would be greatly appreciated

    thanking you

    Lyn
