Hello! I am the great great granddaughter of Eugene Daly, born ca 1835 Ireland and died 1877 in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

Recently, we rediscovered a letter from Richard Daly (b. 1903 in Durrus, Bantry, Cork, Ireland). This letter was written to my great grandfather Daniel A Daly (1892 - 1933), born in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

This letter makes it appear that Richard Daly (and his father Daniel Daly of Bantry, Cork) are related to Daniel A Daly (my great grandfather).

This is the first indication of a potential parish, town, or even county of origin for Eugene Daly.

I have done initial research and have as yet been unable to establish a connection (other than this letter) between Richard and Daniel Daly of Bantry and Eugene and Daniel Daly of Indianaplis. That is not to say that one doesn't exist, of course, just that I haven't found it yet.

I was able to find Richard Daly, his father, mother, siblings, and even some cousins, named Sullivan, but nothing on Eugene Daly at all in the Bantry area or Durrus Parish records. I've reviewed parish births, marriages, etc. and have also found 1901 and 1911 census records. I even have Richard Daly's arrival in the U.S. and the arrival details for his younger brother Daniel Francis Daly (b ca 1908). But nothing further and nothing (of certainty) on Eugene Daly.

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about further searches. For instance, is there another parish, within reasonable distance, in which other related Dalys may have been baptized, married, etc.?

Or, if anyone simply knows anything about the Daly family history from the Durrus Parish or the Bantry area, I would of course appreciate any insights!

We have very few details of Eugene's family. We do not know his parents. Supposedly (according to family tales), he had a brother that emmigrated to Australia. Quite sparse, I know, but any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Bridget

    Hello again!

One quick reaction would be that Owen and Eugene were used interechangeably so maybe records were listed under Owen?

I will alert our parish liaison in Durrus regarding your message.

  • Roger! That is excellent information of which none of us in my family were previously aware! Though I can't say for certain, I do believe I've found some Owens during my research, so perhaps one of these is our Eugene. Thank you SO much for the hint! It may quite well be the puzzle piece that breaks down the brick wall we've hit.

  • I was in the grave yard at Kilcrohane - which is farther down the peninsula, and saw Daly markers there. You might try the Church there in Kilcrohane.
