I am looking for any information on the Scannell family from Inchigeelagh Parish, County Cork.  My 2nd great-grandfather was John Scannell, wife was Mary Toomy.  The only children I know of were William b 1843, and Lawrence b 1848, my great-grandfather.  I recently found something saying William was baptised 4 Jan 1843 in the Roman Catholic Parish in Inchigeelagh.  Lawrence left Ireland and came to the USA in 1865.  He married Mary Barrett, also from Ireland county unknown,  16 Apr 1871 in Boston, Massachusetts.  They left Massachusetts and went to New Jersey sometime around 1877 as 1878 is the first year I found for a child born to them.  I'm sure there must have been more children as they married in 1871.   It is possible that Mary Barrett was also from County Cork but I am not sure.  Her parents were John Barrett and Bridget, maiden name unknown.  John and Bridget had 2 children (that I know of) born in Ireland,  Thomas b 1844 and Mary b 1848, there probably were more but I don't have any record.  They left Ireland and went to Leeds, Yorkshire, England where at least 3 more children were born; Margaret, James, John.  Mary and Thomas left England and went to the USA.  I found Mary in Massachusetts and later New Jersey.  I found Thomas in New Jersey also.  Any information on any one from these 2 families would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Have you tried looking at Church records in Inchgeelagh parish for information? Most Catholic records are held locally so you could try writing to the local parish priest for possible assistance.. One website which you may find helpful is the Irish Times website where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Inchigeelagh/Iveleary parish follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cork%20North-West&parish=Iveleary&churchid=62

Some church records are also available online at www.familysearch.org

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information on Mary Barrett?s family as you do not have a specific parish of origin for her.

You could also try searching for the families in the land records relating to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so you may be able to find some record of any family members that remained in Ireland in these records. You can search the indexes to these registers here:

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

    The US National Archives: http://www.archives.gov/

    Failte Romhat: www.failteromhat.com

    Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/cork/index.html

Alternatively you could also contact the Mallow Heritage centre in Cork for assistance-a fee may apply however. Here is their email address: mallowheritagecentre@gmail.com

I hope that some of these links prove useful to you in your research. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello and thank you.  my name is Mary Todd and you can email me at mtodd81@comcast.net.  I just spent the entire day yesterday at the LDS library in Salt Lake City trying to find Lawrence Scannell born 1848 in Cork.  He shows up with his parents in 1861 in the English census, I guess they went there before coming to the USA.  After checking the entire family of John Scannell and Mary Toomey I could not find a Lawrence, in 1848 they did have a child but it was a girl, I think her name was Ellen.  I have been chasing the Scannell/Toomey family as William Scannell was God Father for one of Lawrece's children in New Jersey.  Now I think they may have been cousins.  Lawrence's parents were John Scannell and Mary.  As I found William in baptisimal records for one of Lawrence's children I thought they were brothers.  Now I don't know Mary's maiden name and I can't find them in the USA.  I'm sure they will show up eventually but I haven't found them.  I know Lawrence came here in 1865 but he doesn't show up on any passanger lists.  I hope your cousin in Massachusetts has some clues as I really think the families are connected.  I think the records for Lawrence's birth will be civil records as I was told in the library that Catholic church in Cork would not allow LDS to film their records.
