Looking for information regarding John J Sullivan and Margaret O'Brien.  Married around 1864.  Four children recorded as born in Killdorrery:  Mary (1864), Denis (1867), Johanna (1869) and Patrick J. (1873).  Johanna was my great grandmother.  Would like to have any information available regarding John J. and Margaret. (Birth, Marriage, Death)  I believe that Mary married a Barry, just not certain if there or in the U.S.A. in Boston.  All of the last 3 children emigrated to Boston, Ma. in the late 1800's.  Thank you for any help you could give me.  Brian Sullivan; Oceanside, California.

I presumed that John and Margaret never left Ireland. I did not locate them in the 1901 census so I looked at deaths from 1890-1900 and found two possible death index records for a John Sullivan in the Mitchelstown registration district which included Kildorrery. (I did not locate a viable Margaret Sullivan in the same time period in the Mitchelstown district). If you want to get a copy of one or both death records, you need to contact the GRO www.groireland.ie  fill out their form and provide the registration district, year of death and volume and page number.

  • Roger:  Thank you very much for your quick reply to my post regarding John Sullivan and Margaret Sullivan.  I have already printed and sent away for the death certificate that looks most promising.  John Sullivan has been somewhat of an enigma to my family.  Family history passed down that he came to the U.S. as a boy, accompanied by who is unknown.  He fought in the civil war for the Union army and received a pension and returned to Ireland.  He would have had to be wounded to recieve a pension and looking at the birth record of Mary, his oldest child, he would have returned around 1863.  Again we do not know if he returned already married or met Margaret O'Brien there in Killdorerry.  Every little clue helps and again I do appreciate your assistance.  Brian Sullivan

  • Hi

I have attached a O'Sullivan family from my Family Tree that have same first names but are a generation later? First names are similar.

  • Hello David   Thank you for the attatchment from your family tree.  I am most intrigued with Maurice O'Sullivan b. 1848..  Although a shot in the dark he could be a sibling of my John J. Sullivan.  The date of his birth would be around the date of John. J.'s estimated birth.  Do you have any info on Maurice's siblings??  Thanks  Brian

  • Hi Brian

I've enclosed details of Maurice's parents and siblinngs. There doesnt seem to be a John but maybe I missed him. The first names are again very similar - it looks like the same family but maybe Timothy had a brother?  Witnesses at the marriage of Timothy were  Maurice Roche and James Sullivan. James may have been Timothy's brother. Could your John be James? Or could the transcription of the Marriage Cert be wrong?

I havent any earlier details of the family or of what happened Maurice's siblings

  • Hi David  Thanks for the quick response.  I have looked over the info you sent me and find myself quite intrigued.  What you have given me does not provide any substantial proof of a connection; however, it certainly has provoked a number of questions.  I notice right away that Timothy and Mary have children listed who were born 3 years apart.  Unusual for the Irish.  Highly likely that some children are missing.  Leads me to ask who they were(My John J. would have been born around 1846).  I also noticed the family's habit of passing down names (hardly unusual with the Irish) All of  my ancestors names are listed in your tree (Johanna, Mary, Denis and Patrick).  The time period fits comfortably with my time period and place.  I have records of bith to John J. and Margaret O'Brien for Mary, Johanna and Dennis all in Kildorrery.  I do not know what the J. in John's middle name represented.  It could easily have been James; however, the witness recorded at the wedding you referred to would have made him to old.  I will continue to probe into this area in the future and provide you with anything that I discover.  A connection would be great fun.  Thanks  Brian
