Hi,

I am trying to trace my husband's Irish ancestors, and list the information I know so far.

The oldest ancestor is James Kirby born c1840 in Cork, a labourer, wife not known but he had a sister Ellen Kirby born c 1862

1881 England Census shows Ellen (1862) head of house in London with her neice and nephew who are two of James children:-

Patrick Kirby born c1858  Cork Ireland age 23

Ellen Kirby (Nellie Lilian) born c1863 Kildorrery, Cork Ireland age 19

1891 England Census Another son of James  - Edward Kirby born c 1867 Kildorrery Cork Ireland age 24. Living in same house as his sister Ellen (Nellie).

All three children married in England and I have marriage certificates.

So far I have been unable to trace any details of them in Ireland and wondered if you could help.  I would like to find out when the children Patrick, Ellen and Edward were born, and when and where James was born, married and died. Also the name of his wife.

I would be very grateful for any information you can give me.

Rose Kirby.

  • Kildorrery is also the name of athe RC parish, and transcripts are included for this area of north Co. Cork of RootsIreland (pay-website). They may not all be the one family but using the free index, and narrowing down a baptism search to father's name James, and the parish Kildorrery RC gives six results between the mid 1850s and about 1870. Included are two beginning with E - Ellen 1860, and Edmond in 1865 (eq. to Edward). You need credits to see the transcript but given the date for Edwards baptism I think a civil cert might be a better option as these are more likely to give a detailed place of birth - i.e. a townland.

  • I can narrow that list of possible baptisms for your Kirbys to four - Patrick 1857, Ellen 1860, Edmond 1865 and Hanora 1867 - all Kidorrery RC with parents James Kirby & Johanna. I also found a very likely younger sister in extracted civil records on FamilySearch - Margeret Kirby born 8th Aug 1869 to James Kirby and Johanna Fenton in Kildorrery district. A corresponding civil BMD Index record appears for Margaret at this link, and you can use the reference to order a research cert (€4) from the GRO which would include a few extra details compared to the extract - the name of the person who registered the birth (often a parent of the child), the place of birth and father's occupation.

  • Dont worry too much about ages, they were often inaccurate in later documents. People didn't need to keep track of time they way the they do now, so dates within a couple of years are probably fine as long as the other details match - i.e. in this case father's name, the mention of Kildorrery as per that census return, plus these four baptisms having the same parents.

There's a possible marriage for James and Johanna in 1853 in Limerick that might be worth checking out. Not sure about exactly where in Limerick, i.e. city or county, but certainly parts of the county would be close to Co. Cork and only about 5km from Kildorrery town.

p.s. there may be baptisms for additional children listed, I concentrated on the names mentioned..

  • Thanks for your help.

Patrick could tie up as I have his marriage cert dated 3.10.1880 age 22 and 1881 Census age 23 giving d.o.b.as 1858

Not sure about Ellen as her marriage cert dated 14.1.1883 is age 21 and death cert 18.10 1927 gives age 64 giving d.o.b. as 1862/3
