Hi, I hope you may be able to help me.

I am trying to trace the family of Mary Flynn.  The details I have are as follows.

In 1840 Mary Flynn arrived in Sydney Australia as an assisted immigrant on board the ship Isabella.  These records state that she was "a native of Fermoy Co Cork, daughter of (undecipherable) farmer and Mary Keleher (? that’s the best I can make out) his wife there".  Her year of birth was listed as about 1819.  If you have access to Ancestry you may be able to better decipher the document than I.

The regulations at that time required, amongst other things, that assisted immigrants:

  • Come from an agricultural district.  So I don't think she lived in Fermoy, but simply referred to this as the closest major town.
  • Needed to provide character references and proof of age (usually a certified copy of her baptism record, which she didn’t have at that time)

Her character reference was provided by Samuel Piddell.  My research so far has established that Samuel Piddell lived most of his life at Kildorrery as a postmaster and doctor.

So my assumption is that the Flynn family lived somewhere around this township in a surrounding agricultural district.  I am leaning towards the parish of St Nathlash.  Apparently Samuel was a church warden here in 1827/8.  There are also a couple of burial records that have got my interest.  They are:

  • Death of Margaret Wallace (nee Flynn) at The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Cemetery at Carrigdownanes.  She died on 7 March 1886 aged 73 years.  So this would make her year of birth approx 1813 and a possible older sister to Mary.  Mary did name one children Margaret, possibly after her older sister?
  • Death of Mary Ellen Flynn at the St Nathlash Cemetery.  She died on 5 September 1895 aged 23 years. Her mother was, I assume, Mary Anne Flynn who died on 2 May 1887 aged 52 years.  Mary travelled out to Australia with her sister Ellen, so I have romanticised that one relative remaining in Ireland named one of their children after the two who left for Australia.

I am hoping you may be able to find a name for Mary's father and even better a place where they lived.  The best guess I have for his first name is Michael or William, but I am not confident of this.  I have checked the Tilth Applotment Book and Griffith Valuation, but without a first name it is a wide net I am casting.

I have tried rootsireland, but they have few records for this parish.

I am hoping there may be some local records about the two deaths recorded in these church burial grounds that may provide a link back to a common father.

Thank you for any assistance you may be able to offer.

  • Dear Neil,

I know this is a longshot, but I thought I'd check anyway.  I'm looking for information about Margaret Flynn, my great-grandmother, born 1845 in Doneraile, Cork, the daughter of Edmund Flynn and Mary Burke.  She married William Garret Condon (not sure if they married in Ireland or not) and they lived in New London, Connecticut.  William G Condon was born 1844 in Kildorrery, Cork.  Let me know if any of this rings a bell!

    Best Regards,

You are right - it is a longshot and I am afraid I have nothing for that Margaret.  I have found the "ask about ireland" website wonderful for free information on the Griffith Valuation undertaken in Cork around 1850.

The web link is attached. http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

I did a quick search *all names* in Co Cork, Parish of Doneraile and this is the search result.  http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/z/zoomifyDynamicViewer.php?file…

There is more than one page so keep flicking through the pages till you get to the end.  On the first page I can see a few Flynns, so you will need to know the name of the father.

I read somewhere that Co Cork had the highest number of Flynns than any other county, so be prepared for a lot of false leads.

    Good luck

    Neil
