I'm looking for any family of my great grandmother Hannah (Dealy) Sullivan, b. in the Bantry area around 1831.  I haven't found any record of her birthk, or that of my great grandfather, Jeremiah Sullivan.  Hannah was the daughter of John Dealy and Mary Sullivan.   Her children Helena, b. 1851, Mary, b. 1852 and Jeremiah, b. 1857 were all baptized in the Catholic parish of Bantry.  The family emigrated to New York, sometime between 1857 and the birth of daughter Hannah in New York in 1860-1862.  I believer Hannah was from Kilmocomoge because an ad placed in the Missing Friends section of the Catholic Pilot newspaper by her sister Mary Ann looking for her brother Richard was indexed showing that he was from the parish of Kilmocomoge.  Hannah's sister Mary Ann married William Haggerty in Boston and settled in San Francisco, her brother Richard married Ann McCormick and settled in Stamford Connecticut.  Her sister Rebecca married Timothy (Hourihan) Bryan and settled in Portsmouth, England.  I believe she also had brothers John, James and Denis, and maybe a sister Catherine, who stayed in Cork.

My 4 cousins and I are coming to West Cork in October.  Any thoughts or ideas on where to look further would be a great help.

hoping to hear from you,

Kathy Sullivan

I looked at the Tithe Applotment records for Kilmocomoge civil parish and found a record for a John Dealy in Scart Bawn townland. These records are from the late 1820s-early 1830s. He and a Charles Dealy had 35 acres of land. This John could possibly be the father of Hannah.

I also looked at the 1901 census and there was a Dealy family still in the townland.

The third link is a map of Kilmocomoge parish. Scartbaun is the bottom of the parish. Not sure where Bantry is within this map. Enjoy your trip!

  • Hi Kathy,

I know it has been a few years since this post, but I believe my DNA on ancestry matches to your great grandparents descendants.I match to a tree with your great grandparents names and other relatives you mention. I am trying to find the birth place of my great grandfather Mathew Sullivan (O'Sullivan). His father was Mathew Sullivan as well and one of my great uncles was Jeremiah Sullivan. My great grandfather Mathew O'Sullivan (as he is in some records) was living in Shronebeha, Banteer, County Cork. Mathew O'Sullivan was a farmer in Shronebeha in 1873 and 1879 according to his two Marriage records and in the 1901 census he owned a piggery in Shronebeha. I have found a Mathew Sullivan living in the parish of Klimocomoge in 1829 and 1853. I have also found records for a Mathew Sullivan farmer who died in Bantry in 1870. I believe it is possible this is my great great grandfather Mathew Sullivan.

If you are still researching I would love to hear from you.

    Regards

  • Hi Mary-Ellen,

I am still researching, will actually be going to Ireland again with the same cousins in 2 weeks, almost 4 years to the day from our last trip.  Who do you match on Ancestry, or what is your ID?

  • Hi Mary-Ellen,

you can contact me at kms01906@verizon.net .  I looked at my info on Tilly and what you say makes sense, although I don't know much about her other great grandparents, just Mary Rose O'Sullivan and her husband John McPike.  John's father was from Tyrone.  Do you match any of the following people?  June Casaletto, Louise Gilmore, Irene Palladino, or Ed Russell.  They are all matches to Tilly and me, from the same Sullivans.  Also SJ administered by Allison Jenkins.

You have probably seen that Tilly has not logged in since November 2015.  I don't know her personally, but I do know just how she fits into my tree, which helps.  I messaged her when I first got the results, but never heard back.

Can you send me the link to your private tree?  What year was your grandfather born?  We may be able to figure this out.

hope to hear from you soon
