Hello Helpers,

Recently, a family member found out that our gt gt gt grandfather was from Bantry, Co. Cork.

Details known so far:

My great great grandmother Mary Ann Haggerty, came to NZ with her family on the 'Derwentwater' as steerage passengers, leaving Gravesend 9 Dec 1859 & arriving in Wellington 24 Mar 1860.  There is no passenger list for the ship, but there is a report in the Wellington Independant, where only Mary Ann is listed aged 10.  Mary Ann's birth cert. reveals she was born 6 Sept 1850 at East Farleigh, Kent which shows her parents as Daniel Haggerty, a labourer & Joannah Bryan [note later christian & surname spellings].

An entry on a NZSG CD revealed a 1902 entry on it for a Daniel Haggerty in Martinborough, Wairarapa, NZ & a 1893 Womens Sufferage Roll for Johanna [note different spelling] Haggerty, also in Martinbororugh.

Mary Ann was listed as one of three children on both Daniel & Johanna/Joannah's death certificate.

Daniel Haggerty's death cert. stated he was born in Bantry, Cork, Ireland.  He died 22 May 1902 in Martinborough, NZ & buried at Greytown Cemetery [no headstone] aged 81 - which would suggest he was born 1821.

Johanna/Joannah O'Brien's death cert. stated she was born Cork, Ireland. She died 7 May 1902 in Wellington, NZ & also buried at Greytown Cemetery [no headstone], aged 90, which suggests she was born 1812.  It also stated her fathers name was Dennis O'Brien but no further details.

The marriage date on both death certs differs, so we have 1845 & 1847 & both state their marriage took place in Liverpool, UK.

So there you have it.  All that I know about my Haggerty/O'Brien ancestors.

If anyone can help with where I go to next, I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks, in anticipation,

Paddy from New Zealand
