Hello, my grandmother, Annie Josephine Goggin came to Australia around 1913.  She was a teacher, she was born in June 1882 and she came from Bantry. Her father's name was Richard and her mother's name was Margaret McCarthy. These are the only facts known by us in Australia. What follows are the results of my 'digging'.

Her father Richard came Killeenlea or Killeenleagh or Killeenleigh or Killeanlea, depending on the record and her mother was from Bantry; they married in Bantry in February 1877. Richard and Margaret had an older daughter called Mary born in 1878 and may have had three living children altogether.

Richard's father was Patrick Goggin and his mother was probably Bridget Hinigan (or Henigan or Hennigan or Honigan, again depending on the record) who were married in Cahara in 1835. They had six sons and one daughter: William, Tom,  John, Margaret, Pat, Francis and Richard (who was born in 1853).

Margaret's father was Denis McCarthy. There are two baptismal records in Bantry with both their names on it : one states that she was born in 1847, which would make her six years older than Richard and I'm not sure if that was an accepted custom back then. If so, then her mother's name was Cath Hayes. The other states that she was born in 1864, which makes her only 12 when she married so that can't be right.

I've read that there is a grave in Bantry of Richard Goggin who died in 1899.

If anyone can shed some light on this, I would be very grateful.

  • Thank you very much, Rory and Merry Christmas to you, too.

If I'm lucky, and we know the Irish are, I might be over there next year,
