Falsey Family

Thank you for your message.

Civil registration did not begin in Ireland until 1864. Prior to this all births, deaths and marriages were recorded by the local parish church so this is where you would have to look for more information on the family. Unfortunately, Catholic records for the parish do not begin until 1839:

Have you tried looking in the land records for some record of the family? The earlier record is called the The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) and the following Falsey?s were recorded in Kilmurry 1833:

These were the only Falsely recorded in all of Clare County so it is very likely that they are related to  Margaret.

The later record is Griffith?s Valuation (1848-64) and there was only one Falsey recorded in Killard:

We have a contact who is actually based in the US but has copies of the births and baptisms in Ibrickan from 1839-1900 and also tombstone transcriptions from most graveyards. I will forward your message to him to see if he has any records of Falsey?s. As it is not a very common surname and seems to be mostly from that area of Clare it is likely that any records he does have will be relevant to you.

Hi Kathleen, our volunteer Kevin has come back with the following:

I do not personally know any Falsey families and they are not married into any of my families that I know of at the time.

I have attached the baptism records and as you can see they only go back to 1839.  Some of these families are in the 1901 Census and 1911 in the same townlands.

I checked the neighboring parish of Miltown Malbay and they do not have any Falsey baptisms.  Before 1839 these Kilmurry-Ibrickane and Miltown were one parish.

Hi Emma,

Thanks once again for your help and the information you forwarded from Kevin.  The parish registers are very interesting, and as Kevin commented, Martin seems to be a continuing Falsey name and that may be a clue.

Margaret Falsey Clarey had a son Martin and most of her children's names match the children's names of a Martin Falsey in the records.  Looking at dates it appears this Martin could be brother or at least a contemporary or relative of Margaret.  I continue to sift through the information you provided.

Falsey is a name around Quilty in Kilmurry ibrickane. There are still Falseys there. If it is that uncommon a name it is likely that they may be the same family. Try Clare library website

Thank you for your comment.  I tend to think the Falseys from the Quilty may be the same family or related to the Falsey line I had been trying to research. I think I have gotten as far as I can at this time and have enjoyed reading information on the Clare library website and information provided me by Ireland Reaching Out.
