Hello

I am researching my ancestor James Penny, born Kinsale approx 1815.  James was convicted of stealing money, tried in 1829 and was sentenced to 7 years gaol, to be served in New South Wales.  James was said to be a stable boy when convicted.  His left foot was deformed.  Parents may be Micl. Penny and Sarah Thompson, however, I haven't confirmed this fact.

I would appreciate any information that may be out there regarding James.

Thank you

Cath Young

    Hello again!

James was actually born in 1817. See his baptismal record below. Here is the actual parish register

www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free Irish government site which has the church records for Kinsale and other parishes in the Diocese of Cork and Ross. Looks like he had a brother William born in 1822.

  • Thank you very much for your help Roger.

Is there any site I can go to for records of trial and transportation records? or other sites that may have information on my ancestors lives.

    Kind Regards

  • Catherynfh:

Find My Past and Ancestry may have records of the trial. Both are subscription sites and with Ancestry, you would need the World subscription. I took a quick look at Find My Past and there is a James Penny listed as a prisoner in Cork in 1833. Likely this is a different James if you ancestor was shipped out in 1829. Not aware of ships records leaving Ireland.
