Greetings from steaming hot Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A.

My sister's and I have been doing research regarding our relatives from Kinsale, mainly Lower Cove-Preghane.  Our ancestors came to America in the early 1900s.  As 2nd generation Irish-Americans we are very familiar with their lives in Tarrytown and North Tarrytown(Sleepy Hollow), New York

Our grandfather John Donovan (born abt 1845 died 9 Feb 1916 in Kinsale Community Hospital) and his 1st born daughter Mary Donovan (born 22 Jul 1879 and died 13 Nov 1879) were, we have been told, buried in Ringcurran Burial Ground.  He, in the section adjacent to Charles Fort and Mary in the children's section across the road.

My sister's visited Kinsale and went to the cemetery in the hopes of finding our grandfather's grave.  Unfortunately the markers appeared to be made of limestone and have suffered the ravages of time making identification impossible.  Our intentions are to replace both markers with new ones.  We have been unable to find any information pertaining to the burial grounds.

1. Are the burial grounds associated with a church?  If so, which church?

2. If not a church, what civil group/town/organization would have the burial records?

3. Is anyone in charge of the cemeteries or are they part of a forgotten past?

We are all in our 70s and would like to resolve this before we join our ancestors.

Thank you.

  • Dear George and family

I have just gotten off the phone with a very nice name called Robert in a funeral home in Kinsale. He confirmed for me that you will have to get in touch with St. Multose Church in order to add a memorial at the grave. Their contact details are listed below.

  • Dear George, Dini and Pat,       I was glancing through the Kinsale section of Ireland Reaching Out and noticed your email with regard the Donovans of Lower Cove / Prehane (Preghane - old name). I check my data base of over 10, 000 deaths in the Kinsale area and could not find your John or Mary Donovan. Secondly, I check www.findmypast.ie which has 8 billion Irish records and found their Death Transcriptions. If you do not have their Death Certificates the following information may be of assistance John Donovan, age 71, birth year 1845, death year 1916, Jan-Mar 1916 Quarter #1, Registration District Kinsale, Volumn #5, Page #250.         Mary Donovan, age 0, birth year 1879, death year 1879, Registration Oct - Dec 1978 Quarter #4, Registration district Kinsale, Volumn #5, Page 289.  The address to write to is as follows;                                                            Civil Registration Service, Government Buildings, Convent Road, Roscommon, County Roscommon, Ireland. The fee is €20 euro per certificate, plus postage (estimate $5 dollars for USA), also give them your phone number + email in case they need to contact you. I find this service very good and have used many this in the past. If you need to contact me please write to my email which is michaelbarry1601@yahoo.ie as I will be able to respond to you more efficiently.                                               Michael Barry, Compass Hill, Kinsale.

  • Dear Michael Barry,

Thank you for your reply regarding John and Mary Donovan of Lower Cove.  We do have the death record for John and birth and death record for Mary.  These were obtained from the GRO, Dublin. in 2001.  We also have the baptismal record for Mary and her siblings from St. John the Baptist R.C. Church in Kinsale.  We wish to place new grave markers for John and Mary but cannot find either the names of the two cemeteries or who controls them.

    Again, thank you.

  • I have old family records. It is written that one of my ancestors ( born 1.8.1824) died 9.9.1829 and was buried in Cove. Is this Little Cove or is it Ringcurran Buriel Grounds I think there were 2 I'm not sure.  Can anyone confirm this Please. The father was a Lieutenant  or Lt Colonel at the Fort

    many thanks
