I am looking for any information please on Patrick Scannell and his wife Mary Sheehan, married 18th October 1902 in Kinsale. I have a copy of their marriage certificate giving fathers names as Patrick Scannell and William Sheehan.

I have been unable to find their death records but have located Mary and her children in the 1911 Census, but with no trace of Patrick.

Patrick and Mary Scannell are my Great Grandparents.

Any information on them would be gratefully recieved

    Usually, the Workhouse census returns only showed the initials of the people who were in the workhouse so you were fortunate that Kinsale showed the full names. I looked at all of the Patrick Scannells in Co. Cork in the 1911 census (there were 30) and none of them were married and living alone. Possibly he was in another county or maybe in England working.

    I looked for death index records for Mary in the Kinsale registration district and did not locate any which had a year of birth around 1876. I also looked for Patrick without knowing how old he was. I found these two records.

  • Thanks for the quick reply Roger,

    Patrick has always been a bit elusive. I found the following IGI entry some years ago that seems to fit;

    Patrick Scannell

    Birth: 04 MAR 1875, Cork, Ireland

    Father: Patrick Scannell Mother: Johanna Corcaran

    I think he may have moved around a bit (he may have emigrated but I've not found any likely candidates in the British Census or passenger lists), so was a bit of a long shot finding his death. I'm hoping there might be some living relatives still in the area who may be able to fill in the gaps. My Grandmother used to visit relatives in Kinsale but this would have been in the 1970's.

    Not sure about Mary, I assumed she remained in the area but it is possible she may have moved elsewhere. I wonder if she used her maiden name in later life?? Or remarried. Anything is possible.

    Thanks again

    John
