My GGGrandfather Denis Collins married Ellen Morgan and left Cork to work in the iron works in Golynos,Abersychen,Wales sometime before 1841. He was born about 1790. Griffiths Valuation was taken after he left and there are a hopelessly large number of Collins, so this is probably a hopeless quest. I have not been able to match the parish names in the Tithe Applotment books with the names in Griffith's.

Key parishes with lots of Collins are Lislee (30), Kilkarranmore (25), Abbeymahon (24), Castleventry (21), and Rathbarry (16).

Denis named three of his sons James,John, and Michael and I have tried to look in Griffiths for their namesakes (uncles, grandfather, etc.

From Wales, Dennis's son and my Collins ancestor Michael Collins emigrated to the US in 1857.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You are correct finding records for your Denis Collins will be very difficult. The name is very common and you would need to know his parents names to confirm any baptismal record you find. www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free Irish government site which has church records for churches in the Diocese of Cork and Ross (roughly half of Cork). I took a quick look and there are at least five baptismal records for a Denis Collins around 1790 in the Cork City South parish. I'm familiar with this parish (also known as St. Finbarrs since my wife' s ancestors came from this area.

Can I suggest that you look into autosomal DNA testing as a way to possibly identify matches on your Collins line (and other lines).

  • Thanks for promptly  responding, Roger. I could not duplicate your finds but I will try again soon. I am not too hopeful since I learned that the famous Michael Collins was the 7th son of a 7th son!

I have done the DNA testing but have not had any good results in the past year or so.

By the way, the McManamons (my mother's maternal line) and O'Donnells are closely related - both were chased into Mayo by Cromwell in the 1600's.
