I have asked in the past for any information about any Walsh's still living in the area of Doneraile, but after some research I have found that my great grandfather Maurice's brother Thomas had two daughters,  Mary and Helena born around 1910 and 1911.  Haven't as of yet found if they had married and what those names are, so I am asking if anyone out there may know of these ladies and if any of their descendants are still in the area.  We will be visiting the area from the US on May of this year and would love to have a pint of the black stuff with my father's cousin(s) :)  Thank-you

Do you have the 1911 census for the Thomas Walsh family? I looked for the record in Doneraile and Mallow with no success. Our parish liaison for Mallow may also respond to your message.

  • Roger,
Yes I do. Thomas had 2 daughters, Mary and Helena, ages 1 and 1 month, living just north of Doneraile in Ballyinlea or Skahanagh (sp?). But when my great grandfather Maurice came to America in 1899, following his sister Maggie, and he was followed by his younger brother Patrick, but Thomas stayed behind and farmed and took care of their mother Mary Pendergast Walsh. I cannot seem to find out where Patrick or Maggie went after his death, so hoping to find some of Thomas's offspring, who should have another last name, not Walsh, unless he had a son after 1911. Confusing stuff, but would like to connect my father with a cousin or two if possible when we visit. Thanks so much,
    Joe

Odds are he had a son or two. Unfortunately, we have no record sources available post 1911 unless you know a year where we can track an index record for a birth, marriage or death. The 1926 census will not be released until 2026 unless legislation is passed to release the 1926 census in 2016.

I checked the online Irish phone book and there are Walshs in the area which is no surprise. Go to this site and search in Doneraile County Cork. Make sure you use the Residential Tab.

There are a couple links below to a history of the  Church of the Nativity BVM in Doneraile and also an e-mail address to the parish.

    Enjoy your trip!
