O Connor search

Looks like the spelling of the townland is Ballydahin. I looked at the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Mallow civil parish and there was a Thomas Connor in Ballydahin. There was also a Michael Curtin listed in Ballydahin. Not sure of his connection to Catherine.  RC church records for Mallow go back to 1795. Since you are in Ireland, you may want to check with the church to see if they can assist with your research.

Many thanks for your reply and the information given. I was fairly sure the spelling I had wasnt quite right! Its great to hear the records for Mallow go back so far.I will definitely contact them to see what information they may have. It has been quite hard as some of his children were baptised O Connor and some, Connor, it can get quite quite confusing.

Hi Fiona, 

I just spoted your post about the Connors (5 years after you posted it). Indeed Thomas (O') Connor and Catherine Curtin were my great great great grandparents also. Their Daughter Georgina Connor is my great great grandmother. She married a retired RIC officer in Mallow in 1876 and their son John (Jack) Greenan was my great grandfather whom I knew personally. He died in 1992. 

So it looks like we are 4th cousins. Which one of Thomas and Catherine's children isyour great great grandparent?

I have a photo of Georgina O'Connor Greenan if you are interested.

Oh my god im so happy to see your reply cousin!!
Georgina is my great great grandmother! Meaning her parenta are my great great great grandparents and not my great great grandparents as previously stated .. She married a Richard Greenan (the RIC member) who was from Monaghan! Their so Thomas was my great grandfather. My mothers grandfather . Ive tried for so long to trace back further but with such a common surname as O'Connor its been so hard to make any progress.
I would be so delighted to see any pics pf Georgina. I do have a picture of her husband Richard i can dig out for you if you would like ... maybe we can exchange email addresses and talk further?

Hello O Connors

My name is Donie O Sullivan living near a village ,Lombardstown,about 6 miles from Mallow and spotted this post which interested me.I am interested because of the mention of Jack Greenan.I knew a Jack Greenan who was employed by the Great Southern and Western Railway at Lombardstown railway station and knew his son Dick who is dead and his daughter Essie who lives locally. Can you confirm is it the same Jack Greenan? Im sure Essie would be delighted to make contact. I think I have a photos of Jack and Dick.There cannot be many Jack Greenans about. I understand another son died many years ago.

As a matter of interest Ruarie O Connor was the last High King of all Ireland and  resisted Brian Boru when he tried to depose him but backed Brian to defeat the Vikings at the Battle of Clontarf near Dublin in 1014 which drove the Vikings from control of much of Ireland.This Ruarie was from the west of Ireland O Connors that ruled the province of Connaught. during the penal times most Irish families dropped the O and the Mac from their names and most records in the 17-1800's do not have these prefixes

You're right it's the same Jack Greenan.  You probably don't know me but I'll bet you know my father, John Considine . His mother and Essie were sisters. Fiona is right, it's very hard to trace the O'Connor  name.  But you never know we might get back another generation.

Its a small world,yes, I remember you but can't remember if it was through badminton or swimming our paths crossed. I served on the board of management of Glantane NS with your mother and your father did some electrical work in the Community hall when i was sec.of that crowd so our paths probably crossed then also.

Good to hear from you and good hunting with the O Connors. Are you familiar with irishgenealogy.ie website that has births,marriages and deaths back to 1864 when cumpolsary record keeping began, also most catholic parishes have some of their baptisms and marriages on line via nli.ie that is national library of ireland. These are searchable free. After that the deeds office in dublin have records back into the 1700's but are not on line and some estate records are a good resource but only at the national archives in Dublin

Thanks, yes I spend a lot of time on those sites. I've been researching our family tree since I did a school project in 6th class in Glantane NS. I've been able to go back about 5-7 generations for most lines. Although it gets more difficult when you reach the early 1800s. I've had my DNA tested too, 99% Irish mostly from Co. Cork. I'll work with Fiona now and see what we can share. Thanks again.

Forgot to tell you that over 1 tonne of Lord Kenmare's estate papers were shipped to Belfast about 100 years ago when he was afraid he may be burned out when we got independance.these are stored in the public records office Northern Ireland(PRONI) .They are bound to have O Connor tenants and in c 1915 Lord Kenmare sold the tenancies to the tenants. The Landsdowne Estate in Kenmare was another major holding and he paid for many of his tenants to emigrate to USA  at the time of the famine so that may be of use to you but I do not know what records are available.Another resource worth looking at is the huge volumes of local heritage  recorded by Casey in O Caoimh Cois Mainge .It contains about 15 volumes with thousands of pages per book and covers Duhallow and east Kerry. all sorts of info is contained in that and you can search an index of contents on line.A complete copy is available to search at Cork County Library but you need to do lots of homework to zone in on areas that may be of interest such as wills,graveyard inscriptions etc.Other volumes are kept in many countries in national libraries.

The baptism records held in Killarney cathedral go back to c 1793 as part of Aghadoe Diocese and Parish that may be of use and i almost forgot that most of the church baptisms and some deaths are on line for County kerry somewhere only i forget where but I searched them about 15 years ago when doing my own family tree.Kerry is well served with graveyard records also that can be searched on line.

I hope there is something in above pointers that may be of use.by the way where do you reside now,i assumed USA but not so sure now.

Hello All, I am Colette O'Connor, researching the branch of Denis M. O'Connor from Ballyclough, who was born about 1835. His wife was Margarett Madden, from Buttevant. Their son Patrick Morgan O'Connor, b. in Cork in 1870  immegrated to Boston and had a fine buch of children with Theresa Riordan, or spelled Reardon, they were my Great Grandparents. Theresa was born in Lynn MA. her parents Jeremiah Reardon and Anne Catherine Carey were also both from Cork.

I started working back into family records about 8 years ago.  I have a few birth and marriage records from our family. It looks like Denis' parents were Mortimer O'Connor (unsure where from)and Mary Linehan of Borherbue. I think Mary's parents were David Linehan and Joan Keeffe, all from Cork, but know nothing more.

Research has my eyes opened a bit more to Irish history than what they taught us in school over here, although I grew up near Dorchester and atleast got some good stories and learned to Step Dance. My sister was better at that than me.

I have enjoyed reading the posts here and find your answers most interesting. One post mentioned the Griffith's Land Valuation and, looking there, I found so many familiar names, like the Buckley's who were close family members too because they witnessed most every major event and signed the documents. So I've already learned something here, and do look forward to getting to know people, if you might be interested.
