Trying to find parents of John WYNN, whose Royal Navy record shows birth in Mallow, County Cork, in November 1835.   Can find no trace of baptism, which would have been non-Catholic.  After RN service became a Coastguard, firstly in Wicklow and then in several stations in County Cork:  Cobh, East Ferry, Poor Head.  Became Catholic upon marriage to Mary or Margaret Sullivan in 1859.   Am descendant of his daughter who came to Britain.  Several of her sisters went to USA, date uncertain but post 1887.

  • Hi Molly

www.rootsireland.ie has a baptism record for a John Wynne baptised in 1838 county Limerick  and there is a John Winn baptised in Mallow, but much later 1849.

There were Wynne families in Firville Mallow, but there is no mention of a John anywhere

Found this Sinking of the Vanguard - Vanguard Roster 1875 -  stationed in Portrane

I noticed the marriage took place in Cobh, (then  Queenstown) in 1859 it is possible that his wife was from there.
