Greetings from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The 1851 census for Poplar, London tells me that my Great-Great-Grandfather was born in Cork, Ireland circa 1817 (34 in 1851). His first with Jane Neville (dead fall 1851 in London) also born in Cork circa 1820.  As there are no Murray-Neville marriages in English BDMs before 1851 I assume they were married in Ireland and had their only child Jane in London, born 1848.

Basic question and thankful for any advice, "any clues where I could start?"

  • Hi John
www.irishgenealogy.ie/ is a free site which has lots of Cork records
You can search for each birth and the marriage
If no luck www.rootsireland.ie/ is a site which requires credit to be purchased
I had a quick look on rootsireland and there are 4 birth/baptism records for Thomas Murray 1817 + - 1 year in Cork but none for Jane Neville 1820 + - 5 years!
If you get a father's name you could check the Tithe Applotments 1823-37 (free online) for Murray in Cork to see where they were living then.
