John Leary was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1820.  His wife, Joanna Sullivan was also born in County Cork, Ireland in 1824.  It is thought that they were married about 1850.  They had two children before they left for the United States.

The two children born in Ireland were John J. Leary born June 29, 1852 and Mary E. Leary born about 1854.

Sometime between 1854 and 1857 the whole family left for the United States.  Possibly from Liverpool on a ship called the Tonawanda bound for Philadelphia.  I do not know what parish they came from in County Cork.  Please help me because I have no more information to give you.

You may want to look at www.irishgenealogy.ie which is a new site established by the Irish government which has a lot of Co. Cork baptismal and marriage records. I found an March 2, 1851 marriage between John Leary and Joan Sullivan in Innishannon. There is also a July 2, 1852 baptism of a John Leary to parents John Leary and Joan Sullivan in Clontead and a May 2, 1854 baptism of a Mary Leary to parents John Leary and Joanna Sullivan in Ballinhassig.

Because Leary and Sullivan were/are very common names in Cork, you need to review the records to see if they may be your family.

My O'Learys are not Leary however if you could see what the names of those other ppl that left Ireland then I could say YES that is them

    Daniel O'Leary Died abt 1877

Jane O'Leary  Mother Widowed 1881 usa

Henry son ( WigMaker) not clear if in Cork City

    Charles

    Arthur

    Theresa

    Jane( Jennie)

John   I believe not sure was single and came to America in 1890 and perhaps was a hairstylist for men. There is one in Cork City

William great grand da was a WigMaker. He apprenticed in Dublin and it's not clear if he worked as a wigmaker in Cork City before going to America in 1880

The thin that is outstanding about the O'Leary is they were hairdressers barbers wigmakers ( for men)

If you could help me out with this information I would be very happy.

Daniel has yet to be found but the best was a fellow that had a music shop and sold instruments and Son John was around the corner.

Now there was across the street named Stephan O'Leary who once aain had a music store. He could be a cousin or something bec my line is filled with georges Arthurs and Irwins...

  • I think the information you gave me is correct about John and Joanna Leary (nee Sullivan)  except it is listed as Joan.  Mary was baptized May 2, 1854 in Balllinhassig, County Cork.  John Jr. was baptized July 2, 1852 in Clontead.  John Sr. was born May 16, 1820 and baptized June 26, 1820 in Desertserges, in County Cork.   What I still need to find out is  his parents and Joanna B Sullivan's lineage.

Thank you so much for all your help.  It is very much appreciated.

    Sincerely
