I am searching my 3X great grandfather, John Good, we believe to be from the Cork area, but only from Family stories.....John Good left Ireland for Canada in 1837, as did Ellen Wolfe arriving the same year in Saint John, New Brunswick- do not know if they knew ea other then, but did marry two years later in Saint John in 1939. John was always listed as 'laborer' throughout his life in NB. He and Ellen had 8 children, 2 becoming butchers with Robert purchasing property and ran a slaughterhouse off Loch Lomand Rd. with his brother, John.
Family lore has John returning it Ireland sometime after 1871 (he was in the census, but his wife listed him as deceased in around 1872-1874. He is not to be found anywhere in local cemeteries, obituaries, death records in New Brunswick or anywhere in Canada that I can see! He just disappeared. Because his wife Ellen stayed in Saint John with her daughter's, then her granddaughter until she died at 96, I just am at a loss on how or where to look for him......They were Anglican.
Any help in discovering a particular Church would be a help......no word on parents of either John,or Ellen.
Thanks for anyone who may be able to throw me even the tiniest lifeline....

  • Hi Kathryn

Here is a baptism for John from www.rootsireland.ie/:

There are only 2 others but they are too late - 1843 & 1849.

I couldn't find the parents' marriage.

As you probably know, the Irish Censuses for 1861 to 1891 were destroyed. John doesnt appear in the 1851. There are plenty of John Goods in the 1901 but none are old eough to be him.

I couldn't find an Irish death/burial record for John

  • Col,
Thank you so much for the info. I will certainly follow up on Dromore.
I'm not sure where Ellen Wolfe was from, but I do know that there are many Wolfe's/Woulfe's in Limerick, so I'll check them out again too.
    Thanks again.....

  • Thanks Col,
I've been ill during the holidays and not on my game, but I'm back trying to connect these two and appreciate your help. The first Ellen sounds like a good possibility so I'll start there !
    Thanks again.
