My Great Grandfather, John O'Sullivan, was born in Queenstown on October 8, 1836. He was the son of Daniel O'Sullivan and Elizabeth Tattan. Daniel died in 1869. Elizabeth died in 1873. Daniel was a farmer. John left Ireland in 1853 on June 2 and went to New York. He settled in Connecticut. His brothers were James (sailor), Daniel had a gold mine and died in Norwalk in 1891, and William a miner in New Zealand.

RC church records are available for Cobh dating from 1812 for baptismal and marriage records. These can be accessed at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4986 (baptisms from 1821), marriages from 1812 on Pos. 4987. If you have any difficulty you could try writing to the parish priest. The General Register Office (GRO) have records too, but these only date from 1864.
You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.failteromhat.com or here: www.askaboutireland.com Failte Romhat also has many other useful resources you can check. Some of these are specifically Cork related.
If you have more information about their emigration, you should check the records there. Generally, most information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure.
