According to family notes, Patrick Henry O'Melia was born March 17, 1839 in Cork Cork Ireland.  He emigrated to Newberry, Canada in 1849 and I have located the passenger arrival list(Caledonia arrived NY in 4/2/1849).  I am not sure how he got to Canada but he is easily traceable from that point.  I would like to find a birth record or records of his parents and trace the family back prior.  We only have guesses as to his parents' names - father -John O'Melia born around 1800(supposedly passed away shortly after birth of P.H.)  and mother Ann Johnson(supposedly passed away at sea crossing) born also around 1800.  I will be visiting Ireland next summer and would like to search records if there is any chance that I might find something.   I do not know what his religious affiliation was but I am guessing that he was Catholic since 90% of residents were.

    You could have a look both on www.rootsireland.ie (a subscription site) and also irishgenealogy.ie (a free site) for details about the O?Melia family . These sites should all cater for the variants in spelling to O?Malley/Melia/Malley but it would be a good idea to search under these too. 

    It might be a long shot but the archives of the Cork Examiner might be useful to. You can get it on Find My Past:

    Thank you so much for responding.  I met with a geneaologist here in Kansas at the Irish cultural center. She suggested that John O'melia and Anne Johnston are likely from county Mayo because of the surname household index.  The geneologist here suggested that although Patrick said he was from Cork, perhaps he was referring to the place he left from rather than the place he was born and lived.

    I looked at Griffiths Valuation and found a John O'Melia and an Anne Johnston leasing from the same landlord in Achill, townland of Dooega.  Do you think this could be the correct John and Anne?

    Our genealogist could well be correct in relation to the port of departure. Griffith's only lists the head of household, so while it can be used as a census substitute, there are no details ever listed of others in the household unfortunately.

    Parish records for Achill begin in 1868 (for baptisms) which is quite late. We have an Achill volunteer though, so if you post a message under the Achill page he will be able to give you some pointers.
