Looking for information on the O'Callaghan & Smith families.

My Great Grandfather Paul O'Callaghan was born June 6, 1874 in County Cork Ireland.  He married Nora Smith.  He emigrated to the United States in 1889 and became a citizen in 1916.  I know he came over to the US leaving Queenstown on October 12 and arriving in NY on October 22 on the Wyomming.

His death certificate names his father as William and his mother as Nora Smith.

If anyone knows of any information I would appreciate it

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your message.

It will be easier to find information on the family if you can narrow down place of origin to parish. Given, that Paul was born in 1874 you should be able to find a civil record of his birth as civil registration began in Ireland in 1864. This civil record will help you narrow down place of origin.  Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office. Here are their contact details:

    Government Offices

    Convent Road

    Roscommon

You could also try searching for Church records pertaining to them online:

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ Church records are available from here free of charge. However, so far only Catholic records from some parts of Cork are available.

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

Some other websites that may be helpful are:

  • Thank you for the info.  I had previously checks Roots Ireland and Ancestry with no luck.  I think there maybe some issues when trying to search with the apostraphe in certain data bases.  In addition they seemed to have gone back and forth using sometimes dropping the O' and the g.  I will check the additional websites you provided as the family was catholic.
