From a mention in The Boston PIlot Missing Friends, I have traced my FOLEY family to Whitechurch, Co Cork but Irish records have thus far been elusive.

JOHN FOLEY
born 1815 Ireland
died 1877 Massachusetts, USA
Father TIIMOTHY FOLEY, mother MARY MAUDLEY no records of emigration assumed they died in Ireland.

Wife ELIZABETH nee HICKEY
born 1825 Ireland
died 1891 Massachusetts, USA
Father DENNIS HICKEY, mother HONORA no records of emigration assumed they died in Ireland.

Three children born to John & Elizabeth before emigrating in 1857 to Fort Edward, New York, USA:
TIMOTHY FOLEY born 1851 Neath Port Talbot, Wales
MARGARET E FOLEY born 1856 Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
CATHERINE (KATE) FOLEY born 1857 Merthyr Tydfil, Wales

Brother TIMOTHY FOLEY listed in The Boston Pilot as a native of Whitechurch, Co Cork, emigrated 1854 to Buffalo, New York, USA.

Griffith's has many family names in Knockmonalea West but I haven't been able to find baptism or marriage records to be sure.

Grateful for any help. I found John & Elizabeth's burial plot here in St Mary's, Canton, Massachusetts USA and it is unmarked. Would love to confirm place of birth for a stone.

  • Jane:

The baptismal records for Blarney (Whitechurch) RC parish start in 1821 so if John was baptized in 1815 in that parish, a record would not be available. On the subscription site Roots Ireland, I did find a January 28 1827 baptismal record in Blarney for a Timothy Foley with father Timothy Foley and mother Mary Maley. Very likely this Timothy is a younger brother of John Foley and the Timothy listed in the Boston Pilot advertisement.

I looked at the 1826 Tithe listings for Whitechurch civil parish and there were only two Foley records: Denis and Cornelius Foley from Knockneigh which is the present day Knockaneag

  • Roger, thank you so much! Maley makes sense. Maudley is handwritten on John's death record and we all know how wrong they can be. I will try to find other family members.

It was so excited to tell this to my dad today, to have traced his family back to the Parish of Blarney. "So that's where it's from," referring to my grandfather's legendary gift of the gab. :)
