I am searching for my grandfather's birth certificate. I have his certified Baptismal Record from  Durrus&Kilcrohane Parish dated Octomber 2, 1875. His name was Timothy Joseph McCarthy born on September 27, 1875. his father was either John or Patrick McCarthy and mother Catherine Allen. He was from Bantry Bay, County Cork. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I found this 1875 civil birth index record in the Bandon registration district. You can get a copy of this record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. Instructions are below.

    Roger McDonnell

    First Name Timothy
    Last Name M'Carthy
    Year 1875
    Registered Quarter/Year 1875
    Registration District Bandon
    Volume 15
    Page 3

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event,  registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Hi Roger,

In April of 2013,  I sent a request and my grandfather's information to the Civil Registration Service/ Office of the Registrar General and received a notice that no birth entry was found. Did you actually see an entry and is this the same office I have already contacted? I need a certified copy because I want to apply for Irish citizenship. Thank you so much for your help.

    Sincerely,

    Sue

Same office. The entry I found is the one I included in my first message. Did you give them the index record or just ask for an 1875 Timothy McCarthy birth record in Bandon?

One possible complication is that many of the Mc births registered in the 1864-1900 period were registered as M'.  As you can see the McCarthy birth above was registered as M'Carthy.

Many of the search sites e.g. www.findmypast.ie will not give you the M' records unless you ask for variant search routines. This complicated my searching for my McDonnells until I figured out the nuance about the M'Donnell variants.

  • Roger,

I did not have an index record. I just gave his name, date of birth, and parent names. Is Bantry Bay/ County Cork in the Brandon district? I'm very hopeful that what you gave me will be my grandfather's birth record. I had no idea McCarthy could have been recorded as M'Carthy! They only searched for McCarthy and McCarty. I will send in another application.

    Many thanks,

    Sue

I'm very glad you questioned the registration district. Bandon is not correct. Bantry is correct so discard the record I sent you. Sorry! Now I went back and looked in the Bantry records and there is no 1875 Timothy McCarthy or M'Carthy. There is a M'Carthy record in 1876 and two M'Carthy 1873 records. There are also two 1874 Timothy McCarthy records. One possibility is that the family delayed registering the birth until 1876. There is also the possibility that they never registered Timothy. The 1876 record is below.

I hope you are successful. I got my dual Irish citizenship about 15 years ago and they do want a lot of proofs.
