I am trying to find out the parents of Timothy Ragan, sometimes spelled O'Riagan or O'Ragan who was born about 1678 probably in Ireland.  He migrated at some point to the Unites States,  Anne Arundel County in the state of Maryland. On Saturday, November 24, 1703 he married Mary Lary (O'Leary) in St. Margaret's Parish in same county and state.  Mary was born about 1686 probably in Ireland. My Great Grandfather told me that three brothers came over to the United States from Ireland.  He said that once they arrived in America they had a disagreement and all three went their seperate ways, each one changing the spelling of their surname.  I am just beginning my Irish heritage search so any information would be welcome! • Dear Tracy

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

There are a number of sites that you can search for Cork records - ancestry, familysearch or rootsireland. The first and last of these are pay sites.

You can also look at irishgenealogy.ie, a free site for Cork, Kerry and Dublin records.

One of the issues with your search to be aware of however, is the early period you refer to. As civil registration doesn't begin in Ireland until 1864, before that period we are dependent on parish records. These records begin at different times in different parishes and there are sometimes gaps or missing records in the series.

This is a good website too for those researching their Cork Ancestors:
    Cork Past and Present: http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/

Again, given the early period, it might be easier to find out more information on the US side rather than the Irish. I would also search ancestry.com message boards and family trees for further instances of the family name.

Let us know if you learn anything new!

    Best wishes

  • Greetings,

I too am a descendent of Timothy Ragan from Anne Arundel County Maryland. My Reagin family in Georgia also has written about the story of either 2 to 7 Ragan brothers coming from Ireland to escape religous/political persecution and arriving in America. My father told me that our ancestors originated from Cork Ireland but I have never been able to confirm that. I have read that Timonty Ragan's father may have been named Cornelius Ragan. Timothy Ragan we believe was born in 1678 & married to Mary Lary.

    Best Regards,

    Doug Reagin
