I’m trying to locate the burial place of my grandfather Con Mullane whose death occurred on the 25th June 1940. His home place was Mourneabbey, Co Cork. I have failed to locate any parish records online & spent last weekend searching graveyards in the area & couldn’t find anything. I’m thinking now it must be an unmarked grave. I’d be delighted to hear from anyone with any local knowledge or indeed anyone that can shed any light on where I might find burial records for the parish. Many thanks. Elaine.

  • Did you contact the church in Mourneabbey? They might be able to assist.  Good luck.

  • Hi Elaine,

A Cornelius Mullane from Glenville who passed away on June 25 1940 was laid to rest in Ballinmona Cemetery near Mallow  - ref: Irish Examiner Newspaper. Good luck with your research.

  • Hi Elaine,

Cornelius's death is here - the death was registered where he died, in a Cork Hospital and not where he lived.

  • Hi Phyl/Clonpriest, I am still getting used to the site and haven’t worked out if ye are the same person yet. I was locked out for a few days due to a password mix up hence my late reply. Thanks so much for the replies, I had managed to locate the registration of his death on the Irish genealogy website but I'm absolutely thrilled to get confirmation of where he is buried. I was actually in that graveyard last week and must have walked past the grave, I can’t go this weekend but will definitely go Saturday week for a more thorough look. I’m relatively new to this research, can I ask is there somewhere online you were able to locate the obituary or is it just by subscribing to newspaper archives? Thanks again for the help, I can’t get over how helpful and genuine the people on this site are. Elaine.

  • Hi Patricia, thanks for your reply.  I e mailed the parish priest but I haven’t had a response yet. I’ve also contacted the Mourneabbey heritage society who have been very helpful and are looking into it for me. This is a great resource, I can’t believe how nice and helpful everyone is.

  • Hi Elaine

You are very welcome.  2 ways to check are:  check locally if there is a local person who has the Cemetery burial book - usually they oversee the opening of a grave, up to the day of the burial OR it may be the local Town Councill who have ownership of the book.  Local knowledge can sometimes be an excellent avenue, elderly patrons in a local pub etc. Yes, Elaine its a subscription website   irishnewspaperarchives.ie   Good luck with your research. phyl is the name and Clonpriest is the area I represent.

  • Hi Phyl,

Thanks so much for that, you are very good. I am going to go down Saturday week, fingers crossed I can find it. I was able to find my grandmothers grave online, it’s in Dunbollog cemetery, there was a photo of it online, I’m hoping to visit it as well if I don’t spend too long looking for Con’s.
