I know my GGrandfather was a farmer/laborer from Killowen. My Grandfather Jeremiah Lenehan went to America and then brought most of his sisters over. I cannot find his birth or baptismal records. He was born June 15 1881. His sisters were Nora McAullife (Killowen) Julia Beechinor USA, Maggiy Finn USA,Hanna Flynn USA, Nell Noonan USA. The McAuliffes still live in Killowen.

Any help appreciated

  • Dear Jim,

Did you try the new database for Catholic church registers yet for Killowen co Down yet?

Sorry about delay. The Killowen is definitely near Newmarket Co Cork. I visited McAullife relatives there about 15 years ago. I also visited the research centre in Mallow, but they could not find a match for my Jeremiah Lenehan or Linehan. Found lots of Jeremiahs but not a match. I have had no luck with on-line sources. I have also spent a day at the General Registry office and NLI. At the moment I have hit a brick wall.

  • Jim, I found one couple with daughters Nora, Margaret, Julia and Hannah and more children but no Jeremiah, they had sons John, James, Dennis  and Michael, all children were born between 1882 and 1902 in Quartertown Mallow, parents Michael Linehan and Catherine Horgan.

  • Jim, This sounds like it could be your family from girls names. I don't know facts but just wish to advise you that from my own research Irish were good at changing names. i have a great grandmother with family in Clare (her husband from Newmarket) and both she and her sister had children Susannah. She said her mother was Susannah but mother's death cert says she was Johanna.
Also another branch with names Patrick & Bridget on shipping but always known as Margaret here. Her parents recorded as Michael & Sarah as well as Thomas & Mary. Took me a long time to accept these as being the same. Don't know why as Mum one of 6 and only the youngest went through life using the first name she was given at birth. I'd advise looking into possibility Jeremiah could also be John or James. Regards, Carmel

  • Hi Jim, my name is Bruce Marsh, I’m Julia Beechinor’s grandson.  I was born in 1940.  My mother is Catherine Beechinor Marsh.  To the best of my knowledge, Jerry’s children were Jim, Gus, and Betty.  Are you Jim’s or Gus’ son?  Betty lived in Hartford CT. and was married to Bob Rolfe. They lived in the Hartford south end.  As a kid I always heard stories of a farm Jerry owned on the Hartford/ Bloomfield town line that was lost for not paying taxes during Great Depression.  I think you may be a Facebook friend of my wife Patty Marsh.  Mike Curley, my cousin, is Anna McCauliffe Curley’ son.  He is couple years older than I am.  He grew up in the Bronx NY and lives in Monroe NY.  I’m the oldest living member of Julia and Robert Beechinor’s family.  Best regards, Bruce
