My GG Grandfather Cornelius McAuliffe married Catherine Vaughan in Meelin in July 1879. They emigrated via the ship Scythia (his occupation is listed as DRAPER) to Boston in 1884 with their 3 children: John, Catherine and Mary. They went on to have more children and lived in Bridgeport, CT. My Grandfather, William McAuliffe was born there in 1889.

I am trying to find birth records for Cornelius. According to the marriage certificate, his father's name was John.

I have only located two records:

  • 21 July 1858 Baptism at Boherbue - Parents: John McAuliffe and Susan Barry. (this is on familysearch.org)
  • 22 June 1851 Baptism at Killavullen - Parents:  John McAuliffe and Mary Sheehan

I have searched the Mallow Heritage Records, also and haven't found any additional information.

Thank you for any assistance!

  • Hi Maura,

Remember me?  We met at the McAuliffe Clan rally in July 2012.  I don't go to this site too often but I was researching another branch of my family--the Treacy/Tracy/Tracey of Tipperary and noticed your message to me.  I remembered the name Cornelius McAuliffe (and your name) and the fact that we both had Vaughans/Vaughns married to McAuliffes.  My McAuliffe/Vaughans left Ireland in the 1850's, I think.

I still have not had any success with the McAuliffes/Vaughans.  I think my problem is the fact that I have no sibling names to search the rootsireland web site.  I don't know if I told you the story about McAuliffe/Vaughan but apparently there was some type of family objection to their getting married.  Mary Vaughan left Ireland for the USA and John McAuliffe followed her; he found her scrubbing floors in a New York City bank.  They got a marriage license in New Orleans in 1859.  I found that document in the New Orleans public library genealogy section.  I now think the family objection had to do with relationship--maybe they were cousins.  I think they were both Catholic, both poor and I doubt either had a prior marriage.  I searched rootsireland and saw that in the Cork area around Newmarket where all the McAuliffes originated there were McAuliffes married to Vaughans.  That is why I think John and Mary might have been first cousins or first cousins once removed.

I'll keep you informed if I am ever successful in finding my McAuliffe/Vaughan roots in Ireland.

    Mary McAuliffe

  • Hi Can you let me know if you find any links to Brennan while researching your McAuluffe family around Newmarket? I have Brennan's born to James and Ellen nee McAuliffe from mid 1820s. Thanks, Carmel

  • Hi Can you let me know if you decide to do DNA tests as we may find links there. I am finding some matches who go back to areas around Newmarket but haven't found any conclusive details re siblings or cousins of my McAuluffe, Brennan or Murphy families.
    Thanks, Carmel
