Looking for Levis, Cronin, Mahoney, Burns of Ballydehob, Cork, Ireland

Hi, Julie, Mathew may be the Matthew Mahony (Glacy) who appears in the GV for Derreennalomane townland, Ballydehob, Schull, in 1853. That year he was co-lessee of lot 15, 28 acres, with John Mahony (Glacy), who was most likely his brother.  In the GV of about 1860 they shared lot 18, 9 acres, and they each had a house.  The lot numbers had changed in the meantime, so this may be the same land.  The next record I have of a Matthew is the census for Derreennalomane, 1901: M. Mathew, 93, farmer, reads but cannot write, BN Cork county, speaks IR/Eng.; w. Jane, 67, BN Cork; Danial Sullivan, 24, GS relig., read/write, BN Cork, agric. lab'r; Jn. Sullivan, 19, GS, r/w, agric. lab'r.

The 1901 census has another Matthew in Rossbrin, Schull: Mahoney Mathew, 66, farmer, reads, BN Cork, IR/Eng.; w. Ellen, 46, r/w, BN Cork, IR/Eng. 

Neither one seems the right one if Ellen was BN 1801; however, most Irish Catholics knew their age only approximately, and it was common for people over 85 to exaggerate their ages.  I don't know what GS stands for in the religion column, but it should be Catholic.

Matthew of Derreennalomane seems to have married Jane late in life (she being so much younger), which would seem to make him not your Mathew UNLESS his first wife had left him and he told the priest she was dead.  Stranger things have happened.  Or he may have married her after 1888.  I was under time pressure when I looked at the Schull register, so did not get that far.

"Glacy" could be important because it seems to be a subclan of the O'Mahonys.

I am not in touch with a majority of my mothers family (long story), but am trying to find relatives that can give me more information about this side of the family. i am always interested in "meeting" family members.I have info down to your grandmother Katherine Elaine Levis married to a Voss. I do not know his name of have any of is kids listed. Your eugene was my great-grandmother's, Catherine Susan Levis Yost, brother, Catherine Susan lived next door to me for most of my life till she died at 99. She was wonderful. I am willing to share any of the information I have with you. Do you have ancestry.com? I have pictures there of Katherine Cronin in her brown silk wedding dress, one of Eugene, her son, etc. Let me know!  My chart is listed under Morrison, Millis, Wallis, and Zerbe

I think that we are third cousins, once removed. We have our great-great-grandparents, John Levis and Katherine Cronin, then your great-grandfather, Eugene and my nana, Katherine Susan were brother and sister. Next is Kathrine, Eugene's dau. who married Vose. She was 1st cousin to my grandmother, Emma Yost, Katherine Susan's dau. Then the next generation is Patricia Voss who was 2nd cousin to my mother, Nancy Wallis. Then it is your mother, Donna Ely and me, Julie Morrison Millis, as 3rd cousins. And last is then you and my kids who are 4th cousins. 

I have met another cousin, Samuel James Levis who is a lawyer in Maine.I "met" online another, Doug Fergerson. Its a great way to connect to extended family.

Not sure if this is connected but my gggrandfather was James Levins police constable in Rosscarbery 1824-1847. He married Mary Anne OLeary in 1840. His son Ferdinand was also a policeman who had a Margaret Cronin as witness to his wedding. Daughter Catherine Levins was a governess who died at 29 in 1869. There was also a William. I cannot find any forebears for this family but it has been suggested Levis is an alternate spelling. I see a Levis family still owns a pub near Mizen.

It was only today that I first found your message, I think I found a death Civil Record for Samuel Levis but before I can be sure, I need to know approximatrely what year Mary Ellen left Ireland for the USA. It is important to know this as I think she left Ireland because Samuel had died young. If you know the year she left and it ties in with his death transcribed record, I will get a photocopy of the original death record after the holidays when the Registration Office is open again.
