My great-great grandfather Will Sullivan ( born 1815) married Eliza Abbott ( born 1810) in 1839 in Cork & Ross Diocese. I have some evidence that this was in either St. Finbar or St. Nicholas parish, but only Cork & Ross is clear at this point. Her mother was Maria Abbott ( born 1778). Will, Eliza, one year old daughter Ria, Maria, Will's brother Arthur  ( possibly from Rathcormack)and a sister all came to the US in 1840 and settled in Ohio. I realize this is a long shot, but in case someone has information I plan to be in Ireland during the first week in September, including a few days in Cork to review the Casey materials. Thank you.

  • Clare,

I spent a fascinating day in the Special Collections Room at University Cork Library, primarily reviewing the Casey materials.  Mainly focusing on marriage records, in combination with dates, family names, etc., I identified likely or at least possible parents of both Will Sullivan and Eliza Abbott . With extensive notes I brought back I may be able to put more together in the future with additional research ( next trip over will likely include a day or so of research in Dublin). With these common names, of course, nothing new I discovered is certain since I haven't been able to identify a parish. Either way, it was an enjoyable day. Who knows, I may eventually become engaged enough to tackle the Kelly side of things! Thanks for asking.
