Daniel McVicker was born in 1838 in or near Coleraine. His father was also Daniel and Mother Jane. He also had a brother Robert. Daniel joined the Army in 1859 ,his number was 400. He was in India ten years before being sent to Hythe,Kent UK. He was in the Royal School of Musketry. He married Esther Cloke and had a Son Robert Edward and then a daughter Annie Elizabeth(my Gran) .He died in 1876 whilst in the Royal School of Musketry and while his wife was pregnant with her third child Margaret Rosetta born in 1877.He was a Protestant. His Father was described as a Gardener in Daniels wedding certificate . A word in his paybook is very strange. It is Sawabeck.I copied it exactly .Im wondering if it is a large house or property where his Father worked as a gardener. Daniel was a protestant.I have been on all sorts of sites looking for his actual birthplace .I have his marriage certificate and death certificate.Hoping someone can shed some light on Daniels family and birthplace,Thanks Linda

    Hi Linda,

Thank you for your message. THe word Sawabeck is very strange, I cannot find a reference to it anywhere. In what context is it used?

Perhaps you could try looking at church records in Coleraine parish and surrounding areas for his birth record.. It may be a lot of work but if there is no more specific place of orign mentioned on his service, marriage and death record there are not many other places where you could find this information.

Most Catholic records are still held locally, so it may be an idea to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that yopu may find helpful is the Irish TImes where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. Coleraine Catholic parish actually incorporates a number of the surrounding civil parishes so hopefully you may be able to find something there. Follow this link:

For Church of Ireland records check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.

www.familysearch.org and www.rootsireland.ie also have some church records available. However please note that Roots Ireland is a paying website.

Alternatively you may want to contact the Derry Genealogy Centre for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

    I hope this is helpful.

  • Hello,

I'm very glad I ran across your message. The information you listed about Daniel McVicker is just priceless..thank you. I fiddle around with genealogy when I have a few minutes (which seem to turn into hours!) and I was looking for information about Elizabeth 'Annie' Wilson (nee McVicker)...my great grandmother. Her daughter, Bertha Esther Green (nee Wilson) (b. 1904 in Cheriton, Kent) was my grandmother. I haven't gotten as far along with things as I'd like, but there's time enough.

Now that I have your information, I'll dig a bit around and see what I can produce. I'm a subsriber to Ancestry, so let me know if there's anything I can help you find.

  • To both Linda and Dave:

My great-great-grandmother's name was Elizabeth McVicker Patterson.  She was born ca. 1800, and I know that she and my great-great-grandfather (Joseph Patterson) lived in Coleraine for a time, before emigrating to the US sometime around 1851 or so.  They settled in Oxford, Butler County, Ohio, where they remained for the rest of their lives and are buried.

I've had no luck whatsoever in learning anything about Elizabeth's forebears.  If your knowledge of your McVicker ancestry includes any possible link with Elizabeth, I'd welcome the chance to connect.

Best wishes on your respective family research projects!

  • Andrew Kane has recently published a book on Coleraine entitled: “The Town Book of Coleraine.” He has gone through all the properties in Coleraine in 1816, as recorded by the Honourable Irish Society (who were the landlord). There are no McVickers recorded at that time. There was a Samuel Patterson who had property on Church St. Also Robert Patterson on Ferryquay St.

If the families were Church of Ireland, the earliest records start in 1769 (copy in PRONI in Belfast). However if they were Presbyterian (and the names suggest they may have been) then although there are 4 Presbyterian churches in the town, none has records earlier than 1834, so making tracing their births and marriages pretty well impossible. (Any earlier records have either been lost, or were never kept).
