I am looking for information about my great grandmother and her family.

My grandmother Margaret Whiteside married my great grandfather James Gorman at St Columb's  Church of Ireland  on the 10th August 1883, Margarets father is given as Major Whiteside  ( unsure if Major is a rank or christian name )  no mothers name is listed , their address  was  Sloan's Terrace which i think  was is  in Londonderry. Margaret died in Kinning Park in Glasgow in 1900 at the age of 42 on her death record her fathers name is given as John Whiteside mother Elizabeth Whiteside nee Allan . On the 1831 census for the Townland of Lisbunny Parish of Cumber Upper there are six families of Whiteside one with the family head called Major and a further two with family heads called John,   Majors family shows as 2 male family members and 3 female members. In the 1901 census for Lisbunny  Cumber Upper there is one Whiteside family , head of household Mark Whiteside and his wife Martha plus one son James and three daughters Ellen, Margaret and Jane  also a brother called Major age 61, with an age of 61 this i would suspect could be a son of the 1831 Major Whiteside. On a web site called find a grave memorial i have found a picture of a grave in  Alla municipal Cemetery  Claudy with the names of most of Mark Whitesides family  remembered on it . I wonder if there is any Whitesides left in the area who might be related to Margaret.

  • My g-g-grandfather, William L. Pollock, was from Coleraine, County Derry and married Rachel Whiteside while still there (supposedly). Rachel had a brother, John Whiteside, who married William Pollocks sister... but this happened in or near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

  • Hi Stuart,

    Your Margaret Whiteside was the daughter of Major Whiteside and his wife Jane. Major is not a title. I'm guessing that somewhere back in the Whiteside line there was a marriage with the Major family who were located around Eglinton. The first name Major was used in both my Whiteside and Rosborough lines in this area.

    My great-grandmother, Jane Whiteside of Lisbunny, was the daughter of John Whiteside & his wife Margaret Baird. She had a sister Margaret who would have been a candidate for you, but I am very certain that she married John Wallace and settled first in Ballyneanor and then in Donamara, Co. Tyrone.

    Mark Whiteside and his brother Major (who never married & lived with Mark and his family) were older brothers of my great-grandmother.

    I visited the area a few years ago and posted to findagrave.com the photos of all Whiteside gravestones I found in nearby cemeteries.

    Have you delved into DNA testing? I expect we'd find a connection between our Whitesides.
