My Great-grandfather Mark remained an enigma for me for so long I never thought I would find anything further about him. I still have some doubt about his origin, I first found him as a fireman on the City of Berlin in Liverpool docks in 1881. I have since traced him through Glasgow back to Derry via various sources and now think he was the child of John Cochrane (1787) and Mildred Kennedy (1795)  married about 1815. Mark was born in 1818 and moved to Glasgow where he married Jean Nielson in about 1849.

I wonder if any contributors to this board can help confirm any facts.

Thanks Dave

  • I searched for a marriage between Mark Cochrane and Jean Nielson c 1849 on Scotlandspeople pre 1855 records. (These only cover RC and Church of Scotland). There was no trace of the marriage. If the couple had any children born in Scotland in 1855 or from 1861 onwards, it'd be worth getting the birth certificate(s) as these should contain details of where and when the parents married.

I looked at the 1831 census for Drumachose. Just 4 Cochrane households listed. 2 in the townland of Drummond: Matty Cocheran and Widow Cocheran. 2 separate William Cocheran houses in Ballyclose, Limavady (1 described as uninhabited). No John Cochrane households listed in Drumachose parish at all.

  • Thank you for the info Ahoghill, I shall apply for birth certs. John Cochrane was found on LDS and so the attributed birth may be questionable. I shall post more when I have tried the birth certificates.

  • Hi Dave,

I have tracked your great grandfather Mark Cochrane from Drumachose to Glasgow to Liverpool as you have.  BUT I have also followed his two sons, John Mark (b. Glasgow about 1852) and David (born Glasgow about 1854) -- to ... AUSTRALIA!  John Mark died on 23 May 1915 in Lidcombe, New South Wales; David died in Sydney on about 23 Jan 1898 (buried on 25 Jan 1898).  I have their newspaper obits. I would be happy to send you.  ALSO I have located one of the last remaining male Cochrane descendants of Mark Cochrane's progeny -- around 80 years old and living in Tasmania who is taking a y-chromosome DNA test which will definitively place the Mark Cochrane branch in the family.  I already have the 111 marker DNA test results for a great great grandson of one of Mark Cochrane's uncle's sons to compare against.  Would love to correspond with you about these exciting developments!   Richard Cochran  richard@cochranfamily.net
