My name is Elizabeth Sutton and I live in Traralgon Victoria Australia and I am researching my Great Grandfathers family.

His name was Hugh Rogers born5.8.1845 in Kilrea Derry.

His fathers name was Bernard Rogers a merchant (probably wine) and mother Catherine Connor.

They were Roman Catholic.

Hugh arrived in Austraila in 1865 to mine for gold and by 1875 owned his own home. He went on to have 12 childred.

He joined the railways 25 years later and was well respected and liked in the town where he lived (Murtoa)

Hughs mother in law was an irish famine orphan for Fermanagh and came to Australia on the Earl Grey Scheme she married a Scottish convict and they went on to have a good life.I have been to Ireland prior to starting this research and if I ever win Lotto I will come back to Kilrea, Belfast and Tipperary where most of my ancestors come from.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am happy to recompense for any time taken .

Yours Truly,

Elizabeth Sutton/Lorensini/McIntosh/Rogers/McCullagh./Quinn/McGrath

  • Hello there Elizabeth,

It just so happens that I am Rogers from Kilrea. My 4*Great Grandfather was called Hugh and my 3*Great Grandfather was Bernard. I have been researching my family tree for many years, if you like we could compare notes.

    Thanks for your time.

    Hi Elizabeth and Dingle13,

We are part of the Bernard Rogers family here in the United States.  I would be interested in speaking with either one of you on our common family genealogy, and to compare notes.

    Margaret
