My ancestor is Catherine Boyle born c1837.  She arrived in South Australia on the ship "Northern Light" in April 1855 as a farm servant from Londonderry with her younger sister Isabelle born c1840.  Their father's name was John Boyle but he was not with them on ship. It has been said that their mother tried to emmigrate with them but was dismissed from a depot (not sure which one) because she lied about her age. Mothers name not known.   Another clue is that there was also a James Campbell born c1834 who came over on the same ship.  He may be a brother or relative somehow as he is buried with Catherine and in his obituary 1906 was said to be uncle to Catherine's daughter. Catherine was married a couple of times and died 1904.

Would love to know any more about Catherine's family.  Wondering if the James Campbell is a half brother or something.

  • One of my ancestors was named John Boyle and he, along with my great grandfather immigrated to Canada.  John married my great grand aunt(?) Bridget here in Canada.  They both caught a ship, name unknown, out of Londonderry circa 1846.

Do you think this could possibly be the same family.  I know I am grasping at straws here but I am trying to find where my great grandfather Thomas Clarke came from in Ireland and one of his friends was a John Boyle from Londonderry and if you had any indication of where they lived it might help me with my family of Clarke's in Ireland.

  • Hi Charlie

Catherine stated her fathers name on her marriage certificate as John Boyle.  I don't know anything about him other that he had two daughters, Catherine Boyle born c1837 and Isabella Boyle born c1840.  They were said to have come from Londonderry 1855 according to the ship record.  They came out as farm servants so I expect they lived in the country area not the city.  Catherine ran a pub/inn after her first husband,  died so she may have had some experience in that area.

I have also read that Londonderry was a place people went to to try to emmigrate. I do wonder if they came from somewhere else..  Someone told me they thought she came from Cork but I have assumed that was the last Port they left from. Don't know. Sorry but I don't know any more.  I have had my mother's autosomal DNA testing done so anyone thinking they may be related could consider that.
