I am looking for information on my ancestor, 5th great grandfather, John Morrison, b. 1722 in Londonderry. Married (abt 1749) Elizabeth Alexander b. 1721, d. 1811 . John Died MAR 1776 in Londonderry, New Hampshire, United States at age 53. Their children were: David Morrison, 1750-1812; Samuel Morrison, 1751-1802; John Morrison, 1755-1806; James Morrison, 1757-1814; Elizabeth Morrison, 1766-1814; and Rober Morrison, 1768-1769.

His father was James Morrison b. 1675 in Londonderry, Ireland and present during the seige of Londonderry at the age of 14.

I believe James' father, John, was born about 1650. His mother is unknown, but John later married one Jeanette Steele b. 1654

I believe James Morrison (b. 1675) immigrated to the United States about 1718/1719.

Any information that can be provided is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Richard Corson

  • Dear Richard

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and thanks for your query

One of the difficulties you may have is that your search is very early in terms of the availability of parish record and you don?t know which parish in Londonerry/Derry your ancestor came from. The Church of Ireland records for the Civil Parish of Templemore, Derry begin in 1642 while the Roman Catholic records for Templemore (also known as St. Columb?s, Long Tower, Derry) begin in 1823, as you can see from the link below:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Derry&parish=St.Columbs&churchid=373

Another parish where your ancestors may have lived in Londonderry/Derry was Glendermot (Waterside) where RC records began in 1864 and COI records began in 1867. As you can see there are a variety of start dates for these parish records. You could search www.familysearch.org or www.rootsireland.ie (a subscription site) for information on your Morrison ancestors. As your search is very early you may not be able to find any church record of their baptism or marriage.

Discovery Northern Ireland has a very good website about tracing your family in the north-west:

Best of luck with your search

  • Clare,

I appreciate your response and will certainly checkout the links you provided to see if I can find any related information. My wife and I are planning a trip to Ireland in SEP and definitely plan to visit Londonderry.

Is there any particular place to check on information ref the "Siege of Londonderry", as my relative was supposedly present during the siege as a 14 year old boy, which implies to me that he family was also present.

Any pointers you can provide on where to go/check for information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Richard Corson

  • Hi Richard

Derry City Council have a very active archive programme. You could have a look at their website to see what information they hold on the history of the City:

  • Hello Clare,

We have common ancestry.  John Morison, James' father was born in Aberdeen abt 1628.  He was our 7 great grandfather.  A detailed and fascinating history of the Morisons can be found in Leonard Morrison's book - http://books.google.ca/books/about/The_History_of_the_Morison_Or_Morris…
